Olympic Torch Reaches Top of Mount Everest

After months of controversy and protests, the Olympic torch made a relatively low-key stop: It went to the top of the world:

A 23-year-old Tibetan woman named Tsering Wangmo carried the flame to the peak of Mount Everest. She and four other climbers, two of whom are Tibetan and two of whom are Han Chinese, passed the torch to each other on the relay to the summit. The climbers reached the summit at 9:18 a.m. Thursday local time, which is 9:18 p.m. Wednesday Eastern Time.

The flame was in a lantern for the trip up Everest, and China's space agency developed a fuel that would keep the torch lit at high altitude. China kept heavy security around Mount Everest to prevent any protesters of its policies toward Tibet from disrupting the event.
