Belichick Shows His Lack of Experience With Being a Gracious Loser
If you left your TV on CBS for a few seconds after the Pats/Colts game yesterday (and if you're a Pats fan, you probably didn't), you might have seen Peyton Manning going out of his way to find Bill Belichick for a postgame handshake. Manning eventually found him, and as noted here at "How Did I Get So Much Cool?", Belichick completely dismissed him, barely even making eye contact, and looking mad that he had to do that.
And then there's the postgame CBS interview. Watch Solomon Wilcots' face immediately after Belichick "answers" the first question. The churlish brevity of the answer took him by surprise. He's thinking, "Really, that's all we're getting? You mean I have to ask my next question now? I'm not prepared for this." And after the second question is "answered," you can hear Solomon's dejected tone, as he realizes the hopelessness of the situation, and just throws in the towel. Poor Solomon.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that LaDainian Tomlinson was right in his assessment of Bill Belichick's low level of class (something like this, however, might be a better indicator of a guy's class), but ... the man is clearly not capable of being a gracious loser. It's easy to be nice if you win, it's a little harder to suck it up and congratulate your opponent after you lose.
And that's not necessarily a criticism. If the guy's a jerk, some of the qualities that make him a jerk might also be some of the same qualities that make him a great coach. Vince Lombardi once said, "Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser."

That is definitely a no class move to go along with his treatment of Mangini and the team's behavior in San Diego. Looks like cheaping out finally caught up with the Patriots. Nice dropped passes there.

I saw Belichick's move at the end of the game. Funny, nobody mentioned it at the time. But I'll bet there were a few million folks who immediately sat up and noticed. I know I did. He's a true no-class ass. The whole thing was reminiscent of the photographer-shoving incident. Whatta scumbag. I'm glad I live in Pittsburgh where a jagoff like him wouldn't get hired to sell beer at Heinz Field. He'd get his ass whupped in the parking lot for pulling stunts like this. Maybe THAT'S why there's a Steeler Nation and no "Patriot's Nation." Sorry, Boston.....

For the record Boston is "Sox Nation" the baseball team is more beloved, i suspect.
Dan Lebatard of Miami Herald thinks BB is more evolved than other coaches, he cited Parcells as an example. Let this be further evidence this is WRONG. Most Everythink Lebatard thinks is WRONG.
BB has no class and lets collect the evidence: A) not acknowledging Mangini in a press conference. B) tossing the cameraman to hug Mangini after winning the Wildcard Game (Tony Kornheiser called it Perfuntory). C) His dismissal of Manning and his shortness with Solomon after the title game. There is also two cases of circumstantial evidence: one being how his team mocked the Charger after beating them in SD and two, Nick Saban's umprofessional way he left Miami (Saban is a disciple of BB). While this may not get a "conviction" the evidence is mounting and as the NFL gets more competitive there my yet be a ruling to the Truth. BB has no class and thinks good sportsmanship is winning, and winning justifies ego tripping.

David, good points all. Baseball has been berry, berry good to Boston. Sorry about Belichick....
Meanwhile, Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith will be in Miami. Dungy (with a Steeler Heritage) and Smith are two Class Acts.
Their protégé, Mike Tomlin, becomes the third Steeler Head Coach in 38 years, today. Parcells resigns, again. And all seems well with the world.

I watched the post game and noticed coach Belichicks snub of peyton, who made a considerable effort to even find the guy. I'm glad that other people saw it and are talking about it, because I believe it shows a huge lack of sportsmanship!

I'm a Pats fan and I'm terribly embarrassed by the latest "bad behavior" of our head coach. I'm sorry too, the Pats won't be in XLI but that's no excuse for bad behavior. The Colts played a fantastic game and should be given their due by ALL of the Patriots team, from top to bottom! Come on Bill, you're embarrassing us here.....at least pretend you know how to play well with others in the sandbox!!!!

Good article, mjd! I think your assessment is pretty well on the mark. The whole BB and the Pats deal seems to be that the carefully crafted image is showing the cracks of reality. It has been image only and apparently players have known it for some time. LT got slammed pretty hard for "outing" the whole thing. Your conclusion is gracious about maybe being a "jerk" has helped make a winning coach. My thought is that it just makes a jerk. Surely, past coaches like Noll, Walsh, Landry, Shula and now, Smith, Dungy and Cowher have shown that winning does not have to equal "jerk-dom" and neither does losing. No one claims it to be a fault to have a less than "sparkling" personality, but it isn't "ain't no mountain high enough" to expect a head coach to win and lose with a certain dignity.

I too noticed the after game snubbing of BB to Peyton Manning. I think the Patriots organization should address the last few weeks antics of the Patriots team as well as the coach. I remember a San Diego player saying last week after the game that the Patriots players bad behavior on the field came directly from their coach, BB. Seems like the players know him well and we are just now getting to see the REAL BB. Good ridance! I can watch the Superbowl now. Great class shown Peyton.

I rest my case! This is what I've been saying all along about the Patriots. There dynasty (if you'd call it one) is one of shame. Too bad some of there loyal fans (and there's not many, since most are bandwagonners) have to be subject to this mess of a team.

Belichick is an embarassment. He's always behaved like this. I guess it takes awhile for the rest of the league to finally notice what a sore loser he is. His players just follow his lead. It comes from the top - down, just like LT said. It was SWEET JUSTICE Sunday night to see the Colts eliminate the hated Patriots.

If another coach would have acted that way the media would have jumped all over it. Belichick is a jerk and so is crybaby Tom Brady. They put on this phony act for the cameras ,but when they lose they show their true colors. I'm so tired of everyone making excuses for these two clowns. L.T. was right about the things he said. The Pats are sore losers and that's the truth.

Let's not beat around the bush here. You people are all idiots. There's just no other way to say it. You think Don Shula was "gracious" after that awful "sea of hands" loss to the Raiders? You didn't see him pushing Oakland fans out of the way as he was trying to get off the field? You ever see the film of Chuck Noll sitting around a table at the Steelers' HQ, threatening Pittsburgh reporters near the end of his reign in the Steel City, or the one of him threatening Jerry Glanville after his team had been beaten by the Oilers? You remember Bill Walsh after his powerhouse 49ers were upset in the playoffs by a mediocre Vikings team? Did he congradulate the Vikes? No. And why should he? He said his team had better personnel, much better personnel, and they just didn't execute that day, which was why he was so frustrated and brushed aside reporters and photographers after the game so he could go cool down. And he was right. What's so wrong with that? Why can't he be a human being and be upset after such a tough loss, just as Belichick was? None of these guys were "gracious losers." That's what gets me about you clowns that post here. Phil Rizzuto also said he didn't want any "good losers" on his team. He'd rather have guys who get angry (jerks, to you losers on this board, competitors to the rest of us). Then there're the excuse makers, the guys who make things up when they lose, like Dungy whining after losing to the Pats in their first playoff meeting about WR-DB contact that's been going on since the sport was invented. Ever see film of how Mel Blount played? There's a reason why the WRs he was covering were never open. Ever see Deon Sanders do the ole grab and spin move? You people are incredibly pathetic, especially this "Gino" clown who claims to live in New England. He's been writing on all the other blogs, telling flat-out lies. Despite the nomadic existance this team led prior to moving to Foxboro, the Pats had a dip in attendance only once in their history, during the disasterous Victor Kiam days. But that was fixed pretty quickly, first by Bill Parcells, then by Bob Kraft and Belichick. Every game has been sold out ever since Parcells was hired back in '93. As Bob Ryan puts it (and "Gino" probably doesn't even know who Ryan is, except for his appearances on "Around the Horn"), the Red Sox are number one in New England, and the Pats are 1A. Grow up, Gino. Move out of your mother's basement, move to Brooklyn, make some friends. Of course the Pats are a dynasty (forget about the 3 Super Bowls, just winning 21 games in a row is mind blowing, and if you can't see that you don't know anything about this sport). And how, exactly, are they a mess when they're the best organization in sports? How many teams can lose so many great players and still not just make it to the AFC Championship Game, but come one lousy play from winning it and making off with their 4th SB trophy? What would you be doing if the Pats didn't get called for too many men in the huddle near the end of the game, or if Troy Brown could hear the snap count (thanks, Bill Polian, for the artificial noise) and hadn't run the wrong route on that 3rd and four play that would've clinched the victory? Oh, I know. You'd be making excuses like the other Colts fans or Jets fans or Chargers fans or whatever you really are.

Wow #12 --- hope you feel better now....now that you have SET US ALL STRAIGHT!!! Belichick's coaching ability and the Patriot's talent are without a doubt a cut above many of the NFL teams. Citing the behavior of previous coaches after a loss, does not, however, excuse his thoroughly disgusting behavior following his team's loss to the Colts. This immature, childish reaction to adversity speaks for itself and goes directly to CHARACTER!!!!! He is not the only NFL coach to have this flaw, but he would do well to take a page from Tony Dungy's (and a few others) book about being gracious when you don't get the lollipop. Thanks to you Pats fans who do acknowledge the abhorrent behavior of this man.

To all you envious Bill-haters I can only say that you should wish for yourselves a coach and a team who takes losing as hard as Bill and the Patriots. Maybe it wouldn't take your teams 20-30 years to get back to the big game. I'm sure Vince Lombardi was a real sweet and pleasant guy after a Packers loss in the '60's. Shut up about our team an go back to watching Oprah you bunch on pansies.

Thanks to Belichick's, Brady's and most of the other Patriots behaviour I spent some time explaining to my son why he should shake hands when he loses. Rather than a talk about sportsmanship and showing class win or lose, I should've followed the logic from the above Bill-o-phites? According to some of you, I should've said "Son, only non-competitive people congratulate the winning team...to show how driven you really are you should stomp off the field with a sour expression, try and avoid everyone from the winning team, and make sure you shove everyone that comes near you"...or..."Son, to show you are really competitive, when you win a big game try to show up the losers because rubbing their noses in it feels even better than winning...Oh, and if a losing player tries to walk away because he's upset at your lack of respect, make a big issue to everyone who will listen that the player is a sore loser".
Belichick's (and Kraft's)lack of class is nothing new. Here's a few examples: Abandoning his Jet's position with no notice to anyone except the press (and Kraft of course), his treatment of Bledsoe, Mangini, Branch, Givens, Vinatieri, and especially Ty Law.
