Gary Thorne Claims Schilling's 'Bloody Sock' Was a Hoax

My first reaction: Gary who? But I guess now everybody knows who Gary Thorne is. Just goes to show you stupidity is still a good road to fame. During last night's Orioles broadcast, Thorne brought up Schilling's 2004 performance, adding his alleged "insider information." After mildly bashing Schilling for his blog writing, Thorne went on to say:

The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking. Nah. It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR.

The complete transcript of the broadcast indicates that Thorne was clearly convinced of what he was saying, and later he added, "Go ask [Mirabelli]." So, not only does Thorne call Schilling a liar, but also he drags a teammate into the mess. Mirabelli was irate:

What? Are you kidding me? He's [expletive] lying. A straight lie, I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood."

Boston's dismissiveness didn't stop there, though, as Terry Francona added his own remarks and Theo Epstein chimed in with this:
"You're kidding me, right? I'm the GM of the team, not Jerry Springer. I couldn't give two [expletives] about what was on his sock, I care that we won the game. The rest, and Gary Thorne, is just noise."
No reaction yet at Schilling's blog, 38 Pitches, but, if I were Gary Thorne, I wouldn't be hanging around the park today when Doug Mirabelli comes calling.

UPDATE: Schilling's surgeon weighs in on the matter.
