Draft Coverage: NFL Network Beats ESPN

It's not often that we, as sports fans, get our choice of channels when we want to watch something on TV. The sports leagues aren't in the business of selling the rights to the Super Bowl or the World Series or the NBA Finals to two different networks.

But there's one exception on the sports calendar: The NFL Draft is televised live, from start to finish, on both ESPN and NFL Network. And I'm just the kind of guy (with just the kind of understanding wife) to move the bedroom TV into the living room and keep one of them on ESPN and the other on NFL Network so I can do a side-by-side comparison.

The verdict? NFL Network did a better job. NFL Network's host, Rich Eisen, was much better than ESPN's pair of hosts, Chris Berman on Saturday and Suzy Kolber on Sunday. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock gives more depth about college prospects than ESPN's Mel Kiper does. And the big news of the weekend -- the Raiders trading Randy Moss to the Patriots -- was broken by NFL Network's Adam Schefter, with ESPN information man Chris Mortensen playing catch-up.

ESPN did have its advantages, including superior on-screen graphics, which are extremely important to following along with the draft. And NFL Network for some reason did not bring back Corey Chavous, who did great work on last year's draft. But overall, the league's official network did better work than the Worldwide Leader.
