ACC Coaches Pissed at 18-Game Proposal

ACC commish John Swofford lobbed the idea for an 18-game ACC schedule at coaches during meetings this week in Florida. The coaches don't like it:
  • "It would be a huge mistake," Duke's Mike Krzyzewski said.
  • "An 18-game schedule to me appears to be too many," Clemson's Oliver Purnell said.
  • "The league is going to do what's in the best interests of the league and also what's in the best interests of their relationship with the television partners," Greenberg said.

Well, just like the league didn't take Coach K's advice during expansion, they probably won't here either. They don't need the coaches approval to make the move. The Pac-10 has been playing at 18 game season, with the Big Ten and Big East moving to it this season. The ACC, eager to keep it's appeared place atop college basketball, wants to stay with the trend.

The good thing is we will get more Maryland-UNC games. The bad thing is we may get less Kentucky-UNC games. I'm torn with the issue. I loved the ACC when everyone played each other twice and have soured on the fact that UNC faces Maryland just once ... and that game didn't take place until right near the end of the season. While it won't perfect the schedule, it will fix some of the ills. However, the best part of being an ACC fan [unless you root for Clemson] is the non-conference schedule. Adding two conference games could squeeze out the ACC-Big Ten Challenge or even the Stanford-Virginia games. Also, there is a feeling that more confernece games could lower the league's RPI rating and result in less NCAA bids.
