Well, it looks like Cincinnati-area law enforcement officials have been, um, "I think there's profiling, no question... We're (Cincinnati) a small place - our guys stand out, and they know that, and you've got to do things the right way. But when you are arrested for, or you are pulled over for, not putting on your turn signal, there's something wrong there.Lewis is referring specifically to Chris Henry, who was pulled over last week for -- you guessed it -- not using his turn signal. Henry was later alleged to have failed a drug test, but those reports were wrong. When Lewis says things like "our guys stand out," it makes you wonder what exactly he means. (Actually, no it doesn't, but that's a whole other can of worms.)
Many people make right turns without putting on their turn signals and it's unfortunate that we've had a guy that's pulled over for not putting on his turn signal."
For all the off-field silliness that has gone on in Cincinnati the past two seasons, I'm not sure Lewis' message is the best one for this team. Yeah, Cincy is a small town, and yeah, the cops probably know who the professional athletes are (they do have access to the mugshots database, right?), but isn't it on the players to be extra vigilant when it comes to following the law? Getting pulled over for not using a turn signal is ticky tack, I agree. But here's an idea: just use your turn signal. And wear your seat belt while you're at it. At least Henry wasn't packing heat or driving drunk, I guess. Though no word on if he was wearing his jersey.
Seriously, instead of Lewis suggesting that police are too quick to make a traffic stop, maybe he should remember that his players have a little something to do with Cincy's two-year crime surge.

A city with a population of 370,000 people, ranking in the middle of the 100 most populated cities in the US is a "small place?" Do 53 guys really stand out that much?

Think again Lewis. Many of these arrests were outside the city limits. Maybe your logic and reasoning skills are the reason your team goes nowhere again.

Lewis is sending the wrong message, Cincinnati isn't a small town. Lewis, your players would still be going to jail if they were not playing football. Wake up! Your playing the "Race Card". Your alluding to racial profiling, that's too bad. Instead of cuddling your bad boys, take the high road and chew them out. Goodell is doing the right thing---penalize them and get the bad element out of game. We(NFL Fan) doesn't want to watch felons play football.

The woman and I have had many discussions about where to go to get away from it all. We've talked about finding a far-away place like Cincinnati, buying a 300-acre farm, and getting away from all those big-city distractions like runnin' water and 'lectricity. I assume land should be plentiful around such a small, backwater town.
I am a little disappointed by Lewis implying racial profiling. Not so much with the accusation, but from the way he doesn't just come out and say it. If he believes racial profiling is actually in play here, he should be upfront about it instead of just implying it.
I've been pulled over (including in the Cincy area) for ticky-tack offenses such as not signaling, or going 68 in a 65. The thing about these incidents is, they all happened at ridiculous times, like 3 or 4 AM. It clearly wasn't racial profiling with me (since I'm white), but the fact that there are very few drivers on the road at that time, and those that are tend to have a higher rate of drunk/stoned drivers or other troublemakers. Police are a lot more likely to pull you over at those hours, because (1) you stand out more, often being the only car in sight, and (2) pulling you over for a minor offense can let them find a major one. It doesn't take too long to learn that if you have to be on the road at those hours, you keep your nose clean. I would submit that the primary factor here isn't race, but that they're out at insane hours and giving the cops reason/excuse to pull them over.

My question: Does the person who wrote this, or any of the people who commented on this story, have any knowledge of Cincinnati, its police department and race relations? Do a little research and you might be surprised — and you might not be so quick to discount what coach Lewis is getting at.

If the cincy police aren't racially profiling, then why hasn't Carson Palmer or Shayne Graham been pulled over or tased? The police department who charged Deltha O'Neal with DUI (Pierce Twp.) once hired a cop who got away with murdering a black resident. So not only did he not go to jail, he got another job. It is obvious to anyone who lives here that the cops are out to get black people. Once a cincinnati cop was shown on Dateline NBC first racially profiling a black citizen and then intimidating that same citizen when he went to the police station to file a complaint.
Let's just be honest, the only thing white people hate worse than black people are black people with money. And the cops have been vested with the job of projecting the hatred of the white community as a whole for African-Americans onto the black community. And the Cincinnati police are doing A+ work at this job.

Good post Robert.
Not all cops are good people, and sometimes bad cops do bad things (see: New Orleans). We should not automatically assume a claim of unfair treatment by police is BS -- though often we do.
I think about it like this: I can totally see some of the a-holes I went to HS with (the kind of guys likely to become cops these days, unfortunately) sitting around talking about how they are going to catch another n-word Bengal.
This type of thing happens all the time -- and people who are blind to it are making it worse by assuming that a cop, in general, will do the right thing -- and that someone claiming otherwise is probably just full of it.
Humans in no walk of life can be assumed to do the right thing -- even clerics.
In my paths through life, I have met some cops that I deeply respect. But I have found that, overall, they are no more likely to be good, honest, moral, or to have integrity than any other class of citizen I've encountered.

Terrible Post Robert.
Perhaps Carson Palmer and Shane Graham have not been arrested at 3 AM by Cincinnati Police because they are home, sleeping, and not out driving under the influence with drugs, alcohol, and minors in the car.
I agree that arresting a "high-profile" athlete type is more attractive to police and I do think they go out of their way looking for such opportunities. However, despite this bias they can't act on it unless the athlete gives them something to act on. Like speeding, driving without licence plates, driving under the influence, etc. No amount of racist white cops are to blame for Chris Henry driving 90 miles an hour down the interstate under the influence. Shame on Henry for giving them someting to "get him" with.
I could say this is because black people don't want to take any responsibility for the decisions they make and the outcome of those decisions. I could say black people want to act recklessly then blame all their problems on society. Of course if I did say something like this, I would be labeled a racist. But YOU can say the same kind of racist crap, like "only thing white people hate worse than black people are rich black people", and get away with it. Why? Because the fact is people bend over backwards to accomodate your excuses and your behavior, tip toe around the race issue, walk on eggshells as to not offend your black sensibilities.
Ironic that those who cry "race" the loudest are often themselves racist,...often blatantly and openly racist, moreso than the people they complain about!! The proverbial "pot calling the kettle black!" (Hey, a double pun out of that one).
You know, life may not be fair to African Americans at times. Life can be pretty damn unfair to people with less money, or less education. Or people who don't "look" good, are overweight or ugly. None of this is fair. Sometimes life can throw some unfairness even at rich white folks when they are stricken down with illness in the prime of their lives, or their children are killed in Iraq, or by a drunk driver. Bottom line, life is not fair!! You can sit around and whine about the unfairness, or , you can do the very best you can for yourself in this unfair world. I know plenty of idealistic black and white people who whine about the unfairness and inequity of the world. And that is about all they do is whine about it, and do nothing to help themselves. They have much in common. They are, for the most part, barely scraping by, all the while blaming it on the unfairness and never factoring in that they have to go out and make it happen for themselves!! It is not owed, and it will not come to you while you sit home and whine about how unfair it is!
