Will the Yankees Save Money if Giambi Is Out for the Year?

Jason GiambiRemember how the Yankees tried to void Jason Giambi's contract? Well, the commissioner's office hasn't officially ruled on that yet, but I have a hunch it's not going to happen. And if that's the case, the Yankees are then stuck paying the rest of Giambi's salary ... unless, of course, they can convince someone else to.

Stay with me here: Giambi went on the disabled list yesterday with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, and GM Brian Cashman suggested he might stay on the DL for a long time. How long? All the team knows is that he'll be there for at least three weeks, at which point he'll be re-evaluated:
"It's going to be more than that," general manager Brian Cashman said. Asked if it could be season-ending, Cashman said, "I can't say yes or no. I don't think anybody can speak to it either way." [...]

A Yankees official, who requested anonymity because Cashman announces all injury news, said Giambi has a 75 percent tear.
Completely irresponsible conspiracy theory time: Maybe Giambi's injury isn't quite as bad as it sounds, and maybe the Yanks are being overly cautious because the sooner he lands on the DL, the sooner the insurance policy kicks in and starts paying his contract. As far as I understand, most (if not all) big league contracts are insured, especially for season-ending injuries.

If it wasn't clear, let me add this disclaimer: this is a shot in the dark based on no factual evidence. But hopefully it will spark discussion so that someone in a position to find out -- say, a beat reporter or columnist -- can ask the right person the right questions. Heck, even if Giambi's injury really is as bad as it sounds, I think it'd still be interesting to find out who's on the hook for his paycheck. But it's clear that Cashman has his back against the wall in King George's kingdom, so I can't blame him if he tries doing all he can to save his boss some coin while trying to save his job.
