If you haven't watched it yet, don't worry: I'm not going to give away any of the plot points of tonight's Sopranos, the penultimate episode in one of the greatest television shows in history. But it must be noted that Jets coach Eric Mangini made a brief (very brief) appearance. In the context of the episode, it didn't feel out of place or forced: Mangini was in an Italian restaurant and was shown the respect you'd expect the Italian-American coach of the Jets to get.
As far as I'm concerned, this cements Mangini's place in history. No matter what kind of coach Mangini turns out to be (and after one season leading the Jets, he looks like a good one), an appearance on The Sopranos gives Mangini a place in American cultural history that few football coaches can match. Congratulations on an excellent accomplishment, coach.

Man-Genious! Mangini is just like Bill Bilichick....only he has his brains PLUS a personality. Can't wait for Mangini to stuff Belichicks head in some calimari this year.

For a Jersey sports fan, I've now had two moments of bliss on "The Sopranos":
1. Seeing the coach of the NY Jets getting talked up by Tony and Arte, who probably interrepted Mangini's meal 27 times to talk about the night Al Toon and Freeman McNeil came to eat at the restaurant back in '86.
2. Seeing a NJ Devils trash can in AJ's room way back in season one or two. (I imagine watching 10 years of the trap helped send him into his spiraling depression.)
Great episode...RIP (spoiler alert).

I'm sure this scene will have Peter King salivating in MMQB tomorrow.
