In the endless (and endlessly silly) debate about which is a better sport, boxing or mixed martial arts, count former world middleweight boxing champion Marvin Hagler as one who is not the least bit impressed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Hagler sneers at the thought that ultimate fighting will push boxing onto its deathbed. That last part, I think, is true: I don't believe that boxing will die, and I think some day, an American boxer will dominate the sport enough to bring back millions of casual fans who have been turned off to boxing."I don't see any skill in (UFC) or art ... anybody can do that kind of fighting off the street," he said.
"Boxing will never die. It will come back some day, some year. We'll find another superstar."
But as for the part about UFC: Really? Anybody can fight that kind of fighting? I've got to be honest: I can't. And neither could most boxers. It's tiresome the way boxers so often feel the need to denigrate mixed martial arts, and they ought to be careful about inviting comparisons between the sports, because when fans have a choice, they increasingly pick UFC over boxing.

Marvin Hagler should know, he was one of the most skilled and graceful fighters in the history of boxing, who was ripped off by judges in the Hagler vs Leonard fight...Mixed Martial arts is more like pro wrestling where boxing is highly specialized esp at the championship level...
Further more I would like to thank The Marvelous one for the phone call he made to my house once where he missed me but chatted with my Grandmother...and for sharing his picture with me on the cover of the Worcester Evening Gazette the day he announced his fight with Tony Sibson in Worcester, MA. I was there for the title fight against Sibson...my only world championship fight...
Marvelous Marvin Hagler was the best of his time and one of the best of all times...its just a shame that Judges were always looking to screw him...Antuefermo 1,Duran, Leonard....having to fight Fully Obel twice...You will always be Champ to me!

This is like Tommy Morrison fighting in his first "MMA" bout, but had in his contract that there was to be "NO GROUND WORK. ALL STAND UP" really big at the top. That just makes it a boxing match. Seemed he knew that he couldn't handle another fighter on the ground and somehow got them to sign to a standup fight. This is another show of how a "boxer" thinks they are better then MMA fighters, but yet, won't fight a MMA fight.

I have much respect for Marvin Hagler. But he is wrong about this. I gave up on boxing about 3 years ago. The last example of my contempt of boxing was the De La Hoya/Floyd Mayweather fiascal. What a rip off!!!! Mix Martial arts is on the rise and fast. But I feel they are perhaps shooting themselves in the foot by allowing all of the new leagues to rise. A La Bodog, Pridefight, and others I cant name. One of boxings mistakes.

Uh,yeah...I could never envision a bad-ass like Hagler (in his prime) being able to beat someone like Chuck Liddell. I understand the obvious differences in the two sports but last I checked, you're still allowed to punch. Takedowns, groundfighting, whatever...Liddell would be knocked unconscious within a few minutes. Hagler in his prime would probably kick his ass if they were pillowfighting.

I have nothing but respect for Marvelous, he indeed, was one of the best fighters EVER. I too agree, that he got screwed more than once. Especially, versus The Cobra, Marvin won fair and straight.
But, he is wrong on this one. The fighters of UFC are complete well rounded athletes. I trained full contact and kickboxing for 7 years. I sparred with a MMA fighter and got my ass kicked. Why? Becuase I was missing jiujitsu, grappling, wrestling, taekwon do and others.
To say that UFC=Street fight is not accurate. Boxing will survive, just stop trying to get big dollars every time a so, so fight is on. In the old days, we were treated to wonderful bouts on regular tv. From Duran to Tommy Hearns, from Ali to Foreman, from Aaron Pryor to Leonard. Just give this new sport some credit.

As a former golden glove boxer I may be a little biased, but I wont go as far to say that there is no skill in MMA but I do think most of the skill comes on the mat "a la wrestling", trying to get someone to tap out. I think Chuck Lidells lackluster performance in what really was a quick boxing knockout shows that if you get a guy with good (not even great) boxing skills, the fight will probably be over relatively quick. I dare you to put a great MMA fighter against a great boxer of the same weight class, I really think the boxer wins 9 out of 10 times. MMA might be exciting but I wouldnt say it takes more skill or is a better sport.

I have done both and a boxer does fine if he is fortunate to land a good punch. Otherwise, Katie bar the door. The incredibly inate skills above and beyond boxing are many and once down the boxer is GONE!

UFC is the best. MMA fighting is so much more thrilling than boxing. The last great and exciting boxer was Mike Tyson.

I love boxing and I boxed as a young man, but boxing is so crooked these days. I mean the top boxers always avoids the top contenders to stay on top. Let us not forget the judges. What are they thinking sometimes. Unless boxing makes a complete overhaul IT WILL be swallowed up by MMA Fighting. The 70's and 80's were the heydays for professional boxing. My father and I would enjoy ABC Saturday afternoon boxing. Now my father passed away and I am disgusted at what boxing has become today. So all those who still believe boxing will see better days maybe in for a rude awakening. I would rather see a shorter more explosive MMA fight, than watch two guys dance for 12 rounds and watch the apparent loser be awarded the win, because he is more marketable. To me that just plain sucks.

MMA is the best sport ever. If you don't like MMA or prefer boxing over it than you have something wrong with you. Boxing is no longer good. There is no Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston, George Foreman, or Joe Fraiser, etc. MMA is the best period. UFC RULES. UFC has Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, Quinton jackson, Anderson Silva, Matt Serra, Melvin Guillard, Shogun, Wanderlei Silva, Dan Henderson, soon to be Brock lesnar and so many others.

I have boxed as well as have earned a 2nd degree black belt. Boxing and the UFC are both sports, nothing more. The mixed martial artest claim the UFC to truly be ultimate fighting and they could not be further from the truth. In a real street fight if some one attempts to choke you bitting works trust me if you have a plug taken out of your bicep your going to let go of the person your choking. When you go down to the ground eye strikes are quite effective but are not allowed in the UFC either. Strikes to the throat at close range could often make an opponent let go of you, which also is not allowed in these supposed ultimate fights. Making a boxer wrestle with a UFC only proves the UFC guys are better in there sport. Boxing and the UFC are both sports, not real fighting. For those that think the UFC ia street fighting there sadly mistaken. If a group of 4 to 5 guys jump some one and you grapple one guy to the groung your going to get seriously hurt by his friends. Why not accept that the UFC guys are better at THERE Sport and the BOXERS are better at there sport. Making a boxer wrestle a UFC guy under there rules does not prove who would win between the 2 in a real fight with no rules. No UFC guy would beat the top boxers in there sport either. But in a real fight with no rules trust me the boxers like Haglar and Tyson in their primes probaby would have held their own against most of the UFC guys who have been conditioned its not allowed to bite, eye strike or hit to the throat. I doubt if in the true ultimae street fights that Haglar and Tyson had to fight in to survive growing up their were rules. Friends trust me when I say their is nothing ultimate about the UFC.....

UCF is a joke. you take any of the top 10 boxers in any weight class, match them against the best MMA at that weight- and you're gonna have Boxers dominating MMA all day long.
Boxing is a skill, you train, you train hard, it's about discipline.
you're never gonna see any boxer look like FATBUTT liddell, with a gut after training, and think he's taking a fight seriously.
UFC ISN'T, Never was, and Never will be as big and important to the world of sports as boxing.
let's see UFC do 2+ million Buys, and sell out 100,000 seat arenas.
