Marvin Hagler: I Don't See Any Skill in UFC

In the endless (and endlessly silly) debate about which is a better sport, boxing or mixed martial arts, count former world middleweight boxing champion Marvin Hagler as one who is not the least bit impressed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Hagler sneers at the thought that ultimate fighting will push boxing onto its deathbed.

"I don't see any skill in (UFC) or art ... anybody can do that kind of fighting off the street," he said.

"Boxing will never die. It will come back some day, some year. We'll find another superstar."

That last part, I think, is true: I don't believe that boxing will die, and I think some day, an American boxer will dominate the sport enough to bring back millions of casual fans who have been turned off to boxing.

But as for the part about UFC: Really? Anybody can fight that kind of fighting? I've got to be honest: I can't. And neither could most boxers. It's tiresome the way boxers so often feel the need to denigrate mixed martial arts, and they ought to be careful about inviting comparisons between the sports, because when fans have a choice, they increasingly pick UFC over boxing.
