Marty Mornhinweg: 'I'll Be a Head Coach Again'

When Matt Millen took over the Detroit Lions in 2001, he picked a relatively unknown assistant coach named Marty Mornhinweg to lead the team. The Lions promptly dropped from 9-7 to 2-14, then went 3-13 in Mornhinweg's second and final year. Mornhinweg's tenure is probably best remembered for the time he chose to take the wind -- rather than the ball -- at the start of overtime against the Bears, and the Bears then marched down the field and kicked a field goal on the opening possession.

But Mornhinweg isn't letting the little matter of a 5-27 career record discourage him. He still thinks he'll find another team to hire him as a head coach.
"I'll be a head coach again," Mornhinweg, the Eagles offensive coordinator, said. ..."Quite possibly, one of these days, I'll get an opportunity. Things might be a little better."
Although Mornhinweg's teams were terrible, with the benefit of hindsight we can now say that it seems pretty clear that the Lions' problems are more Millen's fault than Mornhinweg's. And Mornhinweg isn't totally unrealistic about his chances, adding, "I might go coach a youth football program just to get some wins."
