The number seems mindboggling and astronomical, but it's true: at the end of the year, if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contact with the Yankees, he will earn at least $30 million dollars per year. Think about it. He is already set to make $27 million in the last year of his deal, and if he and his agent, Scott Boras, decide to opt out, it's because they'll know they can get significantly more than that. As reported by The Hardball Times this week, Boras is already greasing the wheels for just that sort of deal. Of course, A-Rod's ridiculous performance thus far this year doesn't hurt his chances, either.
And remember, this is a milestone. While A-Rod would surely love to win a World Series in New York and quiet all those who shower Derek Jeter with praise while spitting in Rodriguez's direction, becoming "The First $30 Million Baseball Player" is an honor all its own. That's something that people will remember forever, just as they remember Ruth's $100,000 contract. If he can't win a World Series, going down in history as the owner of the two richest baseball contracts ever will have to do.

Actually, no professional player is worth what A-Rod is now makaing, much less 30 million. If all professional sports cut every player's salary in half, very few would quit. It;s an ego trip. But then the owners would hog all the profits for themselves. Actually, again, pro sports are very highly overrated and so-called amateur sports don't really exist any more, not even in the collerges.

um...a rod is amazing and all..but no human being on this planet is worth that much...there are people out there who work half the day and dont make as much as arod makes in a day...and all he does is "work" for like 6 hours tops

No one seems to care that the Yankees are only paying part of A-Rods salary and Texas is paying the rest. Texas will save millions if A-Rod opts out and the Yankees will lose muc more if they re sign him after he opts out. They Yankees should hire Joe Giaridi as manager and start over and get rid of all their high priced over age talent.

There's no shot anyone but the Yanks would pay A-Rod $30 MIL. So, they'd be knuckleheads for paying him that. Is A-Rod great? Absolutely, the best, most consistent offensive machine in baseball. However, he's not worth $30 MIL a year no matter how you slice it. If the Yankees were smart they'd let him walk. NO ONE but them is paying him anywhere near that. If they say "NO" to the strip club Romeo, he'll have to come back at the same price, or potentially even less. The Red Sox, Mets and Texas are the only other clubs remotely in the financial position to pay him and I don't see Texas redoing what they opted out of already. Red Sox? No shot they pay him that much. They don't need him. The Mets? Well, where do they put him? 2nd Base? I guess that's like 100 to 1 shot. He is Latino, so Omar may want him, but it's just not a real match. The guy isn't getting $30 MIL unless the Yankees are dumb enough to give it to him, period.

I don't think they'll be opting out because they think they can get $30 mil/year -- I don't think he'll get that much. I think they'd opt out because of two reasons. One, to get A-Rod out of NYC. And two, because they can probably get a fatter long-term deal after the season he's having now, as opposed to what he'll produce when his current contract is up.

This is nuts to pay him 30 million nobody is worth that much money I don't care what he dose.I am a Red Sox life long fan I was glad when the deal with him fell thru nobdy needs his ego you can see in the other ball players on and off the field. Don't get me wrong 51 million for Dice-K is absuard he hasn't proven anything yet and pesonaly I don't think he ever will he can't pitch a game without blowing up
in an inning. And to the Yankee fans out ther Roger Clemens is no saveor he is already 1 and 2 and will fall fast when he agrvates his groin again. He is not in it for the championship its all money.
Last note no athlete worth the kind of money in any way spoken by formmer pro athlete.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate A-Rod's talent really should seriously take a look inside. What more can a human do? Before the end of June he has compiled what most major league hitters would consider a pretty good SEASON. Look at his numbers with men on base, with the bases loaded, walk off home runs. Give me a break. He is the most impressive offensive threat in baseball, period. I think he will stay with the Yankees and they should keep him. He wants to shed the image of being Mr. $ and wants the respect that he thinks will come with a World Series ring. However, as long as there are small minded petty jealous people out there, A-Rod will never get the respect, even if he does get The Ring. Lets face it, he is not a great person, he is just a great ball player. Don't like him if you want, but give him his due. He is the best baseball player I have ever seen and probably ever will see.

I love the Yankees and think A-Rod is great, but $30M? That is a bit out of hand, especially since the Yankees seem to be incapable of winning a World Series when the GOP has the White House (0 for 26 since Nixon; 6 of 12 under Carter and Clinton) and the GOP will be there for the next two at least.

If Will Ferrell can make 25 million for 3 months work on a silly movie, i think a-rod or anyone else in major league baseball should not have to worry about what people think about them earning that kind of money for 10 months worth of work. Capice!

ARod is on pace to hit over 60 homers and drive in over 162 rbi's.
Well if he finishes with hitting at least 60 homers, he is worth 30 million per year.
30 mil is alot of money to pay a player, but there are people in the business world who make over 100 million per year. Look at Forbes 100 Richest List.
