A-Rod Will Be the First $30 Million Player

The number seems mindboggling and astronomical, but it's true: at the end of the year, if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contact with the Yankees, he will earn at least $30 million dollars per year.

Think about it. He is already set to make $27 million in the last year of his deal, and if he and his agent, Scott Boras, decide to opt out, it's because they'll know they can get significantly more than that. As reported by The Hardball Times this week, Boras is already greasing the wheels for just that sort of deal. Of course, A-Rod's ridiculous performance thus far this year doesn't hurt his chances, either.

And remember, this is a milestone. While A-Rod would surely love to win a World Series in New York and quiet all those who shower Derek Jeter with praise while spitting in Rodriguez's direction, becoming "The First $30 Million Baseball Player" is an honor all its own. That's something that people will remember forever, just as they remember Ruth's $100,000 contract. If he can't win a World Series, going down in history as the owner of the two richest baseball contracts ever will have to do.
