Chauncey Billups Officially Opts Out, Surprises No One

We interrupt the constant flow of rumors to bring you some actual news, even if it was to be expected: Chauncey Billups officially opted out of his contract today, making him an unrestricted free agent beginning on July 1.

This was not a surprise to anyone that has been following the Pistons. Chauncey has said all along that he would explore the open market, and hopes that Detroit will match the best offer he receives. His agent echoed those sentiments today:

"Chauncey's first intention is to come back to Detroit, and we'll continute to explore that as an option, but if we're unable to make a deal with the Pistons my obligation is to look at other possibilities that will provide long-term security for Chauncey and his family."

Billups was due to get $6.8M next season, but now he's probably looking at a contract that should easily exceed $10M per year. I think most Pistons fans want to see Chauncey back in Detroit next year. And with Milwaukee and Charlotte the only teams that can realistically afford to offer Billups a deal in the neighborhood of what he's looking for, I'd say the fans are likely to get their wish.
