Newly hired basketball coach Marvin Menzies is already racking up victories for New Mexico State, only this time off the court. Menzies has convinced highly-touted recruit Herb Pope to honor his commitment to the Aggies. "(Menzies) played a big part in me remaining here," Pope said. "I came in and talked to him and we meshed well."
This is obviously good news for fans in Las Cruces. This also was important for future recruits who would have questioned the direction of the program under Menzies. But that question has been answered. New Mexico State really seems to be on the verge of something special here. As somebody who followed Big West basketball back in the 1980s and early 1990s, the Aggies were one of those underrated programs that always had great teams. Now it looks like the school has a chance to surpass that era and become an annual participant in the NCAA tournament. And this signing (or re-commitment) is evidence of that.
As a matter of fact, if you have to vote today, you would probably have to list New Mexico State as the favorite in the WAC right now. The usual suspects of Nevada and Utah State should have strong squads (despite the Pack losing people to the NBA), but NMSU is the favorite.
