Pacman Jones Is Smarter Than He Looks

Holy crap. Here's the last sentence I expected to read this morning: "Once he was simply Adam Jones, honor student." Yep, that's Adam "Pacman" Jones. And he graduated from high school with honors. Astounding. Particularly in light of the 11 police investigations and six arrests since he joined the NFL in 2005. So what happened?
"Money," said Tony Douglas, Jones' youth football coach at Sandtown Park in southwest Atlanta. "It seems like it all stems from money. I mean, he had nothing growing up -- nothing -- and suddenly there's millions of dollars. I think it's been hard for him to handle."
Makes sense. I mean, look what money made Ben Affleck do to his career.

Honestly, it sounds like Pacman is a perfect candidate for Scared Straight, though there's a better chance he'll be playing the role of "Inmate Who Will Be Your Pimp If You End Up in the Joint" than the kid in need of some tough love before he throws his life in the Thomas Crapper.

Seriously, other than the wasted talent, there's the other side to this -- the people who were positive influences in Jones' life who now have to wonder why he's just pissing it all away:
It has been difficult for those who helped nurture Jones as a youth to see him turn into something opposite of their expectations. Douglas saw the potential. "Great athlete. Smart kid. Great future," he said.
Oh, and here's another mind-blower: Jones' lawyer contends that Pacman maintained a 3.0 GPA at West Virginia. God, what a waste. The upside, I guess, is that Jones will have plenty of time to catch up on his studies if he ends up in the clink. Silver linings and all that.
