Let me make this clear: I don't like Barry Bonds. I believe he cheating the game of baseball and is poised to break Hank Aaron's record only because he used illegal performance-enhancing drugs. Making matters even worse, he doesn't speak to the media frequently, and is a jerk to people on and off the field. But if the guy supposedly got voted into the All-Star game by the fans, and if he's about to break the record without us being able to do anything about it, then the least he can do is put on a show for the fans at his home park.Yes, you hear me correctly. Barry Bonds owes it to the fans and to baseball to participate in the Home Run Derby at AT&T Park. He has no excuse not to. His team is terrible, and definitely out of the race. He's also at 751 meaning he's close enough to the record where even if he goes in a Bobby Abreu post-derby slump, he can still break the all-time record. He has admitted to taking flaxseed oil -- and based on Game of Shadows, he took performance-enhancers for himself -- to get better and compete with inferior players who had usurped his play on the field. It was not to make money or to entertain fans, it was to be better than everyone else.
So for once, Barry, I implore you, do what's right. Participate in the Home Run Derby. Your performance-enhancing substance displays of power on the field have no place in games that matter. In an exhibition designed solely for purposes of pure fan entertainment, they're perfect. We know you're going to break the record. The least you can do is go out with a bang, slugging in the derby in your home park. If you don't do it, you'll be proving once again to everyone out there that you're a jerk. You have no reason not to participate, so do what's right, and give the fans a thrill. It's the least you can do.

Uh, what does it matter if I post under two different names (my first and middle- I have no idea who "Almanorjoey" is)?
But regardless, way to avoid having to defend your brilliant blog buddy. Guess you are too busy drafting up the new one "barry cheats (i've never cheated) he sucks but he should do this and this and this and not be surly and be nice to the fans and the media even though they hate him and he cheats."
What you are asking him to do would be the equivalent of me asking you to do me, a person who thinks you suck and are talentless, a favor. Why should you? Why should he? So you and people with actual journalistic credentials can rip on him some more? "Oh, Barry took part in the home run contest and won because of the steroids! What a cheater!" Either way he loses. If you had a bit of common sense or weren't completely biased maybe you could see this...i.e., if you had what people actually want (insight and impartiality) you may not suck so much.
So easy to be a critic, especially a "blogger" that does no research. How about some actual insight? Oh, no, wait...that would require effort. Nevermind.

They should just have Russell Martin do it. He's a much bigger star than Bonds anyway.

Barry Bonds is much more complex than all of you are making him out to be. This is a man who grew up amoungst some of the greatest players of all time. Most of them were black and Barry witnessed what he precieved as a bias against them. He has choosen to play the role of the villian with his career and this was done with logic. He uses the public outcrys as motivation. He wants you to tell him he is dumb, a cheater and a bad human. For you to say "dance monkey" is just proving what he has believed all along.
I met Barry several years before he broke the single season record while I was on vacation in Hawaii. He was there with his family (Bobby included) and I approached him while he was with his wife and kids playing at the pool. He talked to me and even signed an autograph. Several other people approached him after and he signed all of there autographs. He puts on an act for the media because he will never win with you. Even if you discount him because he used steriods, you should still acknowledge the fact that he put on the greatest show in baseball that anyone has ever seen. He will unite the single season record and the all-time record for the first time since the Babe. Funny how the Babe invented the corked bat. You may not like the man as a person, but for pure entertainment value history has never seen a Barry Bonds. Were lucky to have.

Let me make it clear that I don't like the author of this article because he is a moron to the umpteenth degree. 1. Barry Bonds has never tested positive for steroids. 2. There is ZERO! proof that he ever took steroids. 3. Baseball had a chance to test for roids, they never did, so to go back and speculate now is BEYOND STUPID just like the blog author.
Barry will break the record and you can kiss his azz and lick his baseballs, just like your dad did when Hank Aaron broke it the first time. It's no coincidence that a generation later another black man is about to break the record and he's hated for whatever "reason".

It's time Barry does something to improve his image with baseball fans. He's about to break one of the most cherished MLB records and everything you hear is negative. I really don't see why he wouldn't hit in the derby and at least portray a positive image before the breaking the record. Seems like a dumb mistake.

Even if you assume participating in the homerun derby would rehabilitate Barry's image (it wouldn't), that is completely different than Barry "owing" it to the fans.

According to past rules, only the top five leaders at the All Star break are allowed to be in the Home Run Derby. Bonds is not within the top ten, so he doesn't deserve to be there.
The only reason he was voted onto the All Star team was a last minute voting rush which was paid for by Bonds and his people. It's sad how many people will spend hours casting phony votes for money. - No wonder Baseball is losing ground to Football and Basketball!!

Isn't it odd that Bonds can't catch up to a low outside fast ball now that he is off his undetectable drugs?
Anyone who would respect this lowlife (Bonds) needs to seek treatment as soon as possible. Baseball might have a chance to heal the wounds of the drug era once we don't have to look at "Mr. Asterisk's" ugly ass anymore.
