Bill Maas Won't Be Back at Fox

Not only are NFL teams getting tough on players this off-season, but TV networks are getting tough on ex-players, too.

Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell tells USA Today that Bill Maas, who was arrested over the weekend on felony drug and weapons charges, wasn't expected to work as a Fox broadcaster this season anyway, and now definitely "will not be coming back to Fox in any capacity."

That is a remarkable fall for Maas, who at one point was considered one of the up-and-coming talents in the football broadcasting business. At the end of the 2000 season, Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated called Maas and his play-by-play partner, Sam Rosen, the best announcers in the NFL.

But Maas's skills as an announcer seemed to erode in recent years, and now his broadcasting career is almost certainly over. If you're as talented an announcer as, say, Marv Albert, you can keep working after getting into trouble in your personal life. But if you're Bill Maas, you'd better keep your nose clean.
