USC coach Pete Carroll is sometimes in a world of his own, doing that whole recruiting and building a football team thing. So forgive him if he miraculously missed out on last week's mud slinging at USC, the Pac-10 and most of college football by LSU coach Les Miles.
When finally briefed of the quotes by Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf, Carroll is quoted thusly:
He's really taking a shot at all the other schools we play. Maybe the comments should come from the coaches at the other schools, including Charlie (Weis) at Notre Dame. He didn't slam us. He slammed all the other schools we play.See what he did? He didn't make it personal, and took the debate off USC's porch-step. People can say a lot of things good and bad about Pete Carroll, but few coaches are more savvy at handling the media and controversies.

Pete Carroll is a class act, Miles is a small town coach that does'nt have anything else to do with his time. Instead of Les Miles, it should be Less Miles. He's setting himself up for the abyss that's comming sooner, than later. But if you think about it, he's like most of the LSU fans....jealous and mean spirited. Enough said about classless Less Miles. Go Trojans!

As an SEC fan, I have to admit two things. First, the SEC is the toughest conference in America, Second, it's not by much. Even though I pull for the SEC and my Ga Dawgs, I have to like the way the Pac 10 plays tough out of conference games. USC plays at ND and Nebraska this year. Combine that with the round robin pac10 schedule and I have no issue with them playing in the NC game this year if they run the table. If anyone has been getting an unfair push into NC games it's the Big 12 teams. I think everyone outside of Oklahoma will admit that USC should have played LSU in 03, and Auburn vs USC in 04'. Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Nebraska get the Championship nod over Oregon in 01-02' only to get stomped by Miami. Not saying the big 12 is a weak conference, and they always have 05' Texas to hang their hat on, but if the SEC wants to point fingers at a conference getting the BCS gifts it's the big 12 not he PAC 10

I agree on the Big 12, and you can throw the Big 10 in there, too. The Pac-10 is a tough, deep conference. On the other hand, and nothing against teams like Texas A&M, Wisconsin, and Penn State, but the Big 12 and 10 are basically two team conferences, Texas/Oklahoma and OSU/Michigan. And OSU and Michigan aren't really all that great, especially Michigan. And yeah, Oklahoma shouldn't have been in the title game in either 03 or 04.
By the way, what was up with ESPN's love affair with Oklahoma back then? In 03, Herbstreit proclaimed that year's Sooner team to be one of the best ever, and then they go and lose to K-State and LSU. In 04, all the Gameday pundits spent all their time bashing Auburn in Oklahoma's favor. Oklahoma gets smeared by USC, while Auburn ends up serving as an NFL farm team. It probably goes without saying that the 04 Auburn backfield (Campbell, Brown, Williams) is starting in the NFL now.

USC couldnt hold its own if it had to play teams as good as the ones' in the SEC. Pete Carroll is where he's at simply because of the "Cupcake" conference he coaches in. ESPN did a poll and about a year ago and concluded that the PAC 10 was one of the weakess conferences out there. The only reason SEC teams arent playing in the BCS Championship game more often is because they have to play other SEC teams to get there. It's almost impossible to go thru that kinda schedule undeated.

"ESPN did a poll" that determined that the Pac Ten was the weakest conference? Uhhh, a pull? That's what you come up with? Not games? Not results? A Poll? And who voted? Homer fans like you?
LSU plays exactly one even moderately tough rode game this year vs. Bama. Despite that fact LSU still won't make the title game, they'll blow a game or two that they shouldn't.
What has Les Miles ever done? Beaten ND in a bowl game? ND has lost a LOT of bowl games in a row so that's neither difficult or rare. Was he there for their co-title? No.
If LSU wants to act tough, how about scheduling SC rather than crying about them. USC doesn't duck people, they'll crown LSU like they have every other team from the SEC they've played including the beat down they put on the team that won LSU's division of the SEC last year and the one they put on a top five Auburn team @ Auburn. USC goes TO SEC schools and crowns their ass, I'm sure SC would have no problem adding LSU to their list.

SEC out of conference = Directional School University. SW, NW, SE, SW State University. What a joke! USC has whooped on Arky and Auburn the past 4 years. The other SEC schools keep ducking the Trojans. The numbers don't lie but delusional SEC fans do.

Hey Chris
I went to an SEC school, I live in Atlanta, I love SEC football. I think you are talking like a complete HOMER if you say that USC couldn't hold it's owne in the SEC. Yes, they may have a tougher road to the BCS title game if they were playing in the SEC, but The PAC 10 is not a cupcake, and USC consistantly has one of the toughest schedules in the country which until this year included repeated beatings of top tier SEC programs, (auburn twice, arkansas twice). I agree the SEC is the best conference. But USC is good, as is the PAC 10, and I would love to see a ESPN poll that says it isn't. What did they poll idiot college football fans like yourself. I've also seen polls that show the PAC 10 as the toughest conference, it just depends on what stats your looking at, and who your asking. But as for last year, yes the SEC was the best.

Any ESPN poll bashing the Pac-10 is probably rigged. Another example of ESPN Eastern bias. ESPN's problem is that they continue to cater to the huge fanbases of Michigan and OSU (as well as to their television contract with the Big 10) and thus would never admit that the Pac-10 if better than the Big 10 and 12. The Pac-10 schools other than USC have smaller fanbases than those conferences, hence ESPN's bashing. Don't trust what the so-called ESPN experts say--they're only doing what the higher-ups think will make the company money.
Here's an interesting stat: number of schools by conference with Rivals top 10 recruiting classes in 2007.
ACC: 0
Big 10: 1
Big 12: 1
Big East: 0
Pac-10: 2
SEC: 5
Notre Dame is the 10th team, of course.

Miles was indeed indicting the entire Slac Ten. USC is an elite program, on par with the top SEC teams, but does not have nearly the kind of week to week in conference competition. As for OOC, USC HAS to play a tough OOC schedule...but I won't give you Notre Dame as a tough team, they are a fraud, don't try to place them on par with Florida, Auburn, LSU or Georgia.
The Slac Ten agreed to the BCS formula and promised to expand and have a conference championship game. They chickened out, and look what has happened with USC as the only real powerhouse sucking up all of the oxygen out West.
Look at the head to head BCS bowl records and you will discover who is dominant...the SEC has the best record.
You fans of other Slac Ten schools have no one to blame but yourselves for USC's position. Go ahead and defend ole Petey and assume the position for more pounding from the Trojans.
USC would be competitive in the SEC, but would not have enjoyed the success it has had in an uneven playing field of the Slac Ten.

I am so tired of hearing about how tough the SEC is. How can a conference that as a whole does nothing but "play with themselves" prove it's any good. The SEC has created an illusion. Just because you say it's tough doesn't mean it's true. None of your teams schedule tough games out of conference. Last year you scheduled two top 20 (CAL & SC) teams outside you conference the entire year. And again this year, LSU has Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, and Mississippi. As a citizen of So.Cal, I think that Les Miles is right. The Trojans do have a good team and are in a situation that always makes it easier for them to get to the title game. The fact that they do not have to play a conference game is a big part of this problem.
Several years ago under Saban, LSU had to play top ranked Georgia twice, the second time in the SEC Conference Championship. If LSU lost, they would have never made it to the Title game. But when LSU won the BCS adjusted the ratings for Georgia which caused the computers to consider LSU's schedule less tough (because Georgia now had two loses)! This almost caused LSU to miss the Title game.
Summary, if LSU loss it hurt them with the BCS. If they won, it hurt them with the BCS.
All the while, the Trojans got to sit there and just watch, letting their players heal. Too bad that year LSU did not get to play the Trojans in the Title game, but had to play OU.
On another note: TJ above says, "(Miles is) like most of the LSU fans....jealous and mean spirited." Wait a minute TJ. Les Miles did not attack anyone personally, he only made remarks about conference schedules. You on the other hand, along with a few other above, are actually attacking the character of a coach and LSU fans. You statement is thus baseless and hypocritical.
Lets settle it on the field!

Jason, you are not a citizen of So. Cal. Your diguising yourself. No resident from So. Cal would talk like that, defending Less Miles. In fact, I believe your a mean spirited LSU fan. I lived in Cal for 33 years and now I live in the South. Trojan fans don't talk the way you do. Now SEC fans on the other hand, express themselves as you have. Lessy baby has slammed Saban in the past. The guy has no class.
USC is 17-10-1 historically agaist SEC. They are the premier college football program and will be so long as Pete Carroll is there. USC doesn't rebuild like all SEC teams and other wanna bees, USC just restocks. They've got so much depth. That's from recruitment, my man, by a great coach. Why don't you talk LSU and Alabama into going out to So. Cal and play them. Tenn has my respect, they played Cal at home last year and won.(Now they have to go out to Cal)The score might be reversed. Cal's a very tough place to play. Auburn and Arkansas, also, have my respect. They too played USC, and tried. USC would in fact dominate SEC based on what they have done. Don't you just love USC Jason. ha
LSU fans: We got two of your best, McKnight and John David Booty. We thank ya!

give me a break!! I give USC all the credit in the world for being a team to be reckoned with, but calling that USC and the next 9 a strong conference is ludacris. USC HAS to schedule other name teams out of conference or they would have nothing to hang their hat on. Calling Nebraska and Notre Dame powerhouses is also a joke. Notre Dame can only beat the armed forces and Nebraska hasnt had a team worth a crud in years. They just play Texas and Oklahoma and OU gets exposed every year in the bowls. Les Miles should be giving Pete Carroll more respect than his remarks did,, but he was absolutely correct comparing those schedules and conferences!!

For the first time, I would like to make a comment on how Pete's response was to Les's ranting on the radio. Who cares about which conference is better than others. When a man who is supposed to be a leader of many young college athletes goes on a radio show to put such negative ranting about anything shows what kind character he has. (Instead of ranting on the radio, why doesn't he simply challenge USC to schedule LSU to settle this once for all?)
Now lets look at the how classy coach Pete Carroll responded. I certainly know which man I would choose to have as my child's coach. If I had a son who is about to play college football, I would not care about which conference is stronger or has tougher schedule, BUT I would care deeply what kind of coach will be educating my son.
Would anyone want their kids to be educated in whatever subject by coach Les Miles?
God I hope not!
(BTW my wife said to me the other night, "Why do men rant publicly? Especially the people in sports. Don't they know that usually end their career? It must be true that they are just dumb jock." Well, I couldn't respond to her on that comment since ...... I am also a dumb jock who rant time to time.)
