Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga had a press conference yesterday to promote their Sept. 8 fight, and a bit of a slapping match broke out:
I mentioned earlier that I'd like to see a war of words to hype the Winky Wright-Bernard Hopkins fight, but in watching that Vargas-Mayorga press conference fight, my first thought was that the whole thing looked staged. The presence of Don King will do that.

This one might be interesting. Both guys are desperate for a win. I'm pulling for Vargas but he hasn't beaten anyone of consequence in a while.

It should be a good fight. I won't be pulling for either because I don't like either. I still remember Vargas spitting on an opponent after he had knocked him out. And Mayorga always lets his alligator mouth overload his jaybird ass.

Yes, Oxnard. Now, this is one of those matches between a couple of fighters who get to this "Do or die" crossroad in their careers. I can't help but want to see the guy who once became the youngest junior middleweight champion in boxing history and went on to dismantle the likes of Marquez, Quartey and Flores. The Azteca Warrior who left every ounce of his being in the ring against Trinidad and De la Hoya and showed us all he would rather die on the line than quit. I want to see that man at the opening bell against Mayorga show us all he can still go to war and be the last one standing when all the dust settles. No disrespect intended toward Mayorga, this is a La Colonia Boxing thing.
