And who are we to challenge him? We wrote at the end of June -- thanks to a close study of Scott Boras' tactics by The Hardball Times -- that Alex Rodriguez was basically assured of a $30 million-per-year deal at the end of this season, provided he opts out of his contract with the Yankees. Now, Boras is openly setting the table for such a deal, right after the Yankees broke down and offered to negotiate mid-season: After the New York Yankees on Wednesday indicated they would break from tradition and negotiate during the season with Alex Rodriguez on a contract extension, his agent moved in quickly to define what it would take to keep the superstar third baseman playing in New York. And that would be unprecedented millions per season. As I said, who are we to challenge him? If Barry Zito can net $120 million, why can't A-Rod -- who's set to make around $27 million next year anyway -- bump his extension up to $30 million per year? That would set a new precedent for contracts for a second time in Rodriguez's career; if you can't win a World Series, that isn't such a bad consolation. At least, A-Rod's grandchildren will think so.
Even if his client doesn't go the opt-out route, Boras told the Post that there are existing stipulations in the current deal that all but guarantee Rodriguez would earn a minimum of $32 million in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
"The way the provision operates, he either gets that or he can become a free agent after any of those seasons again," Boras told the newspaper.

I am a long time Yankee Fan, if they give Rodriquez
30 Milloion a year they should fall aapart. For that money they should be able to get what they really need, a pitching staff. Additionally A Rod hasn't
demonstarted an ability to play in October

If A-ROD Chooses to cement his place in Baseball History ALONE its a no-brainer. The Yankees will PAY his offer and he will stay with the YANKEES. Let the pundits and reporter aficionados give their spins...they mean nothing...A-ROD controls his destiny!

The Yankees have huge problems this year. A-Rod is not one of the Yankees problems but he has rather had another MVP type season. For those of you that think the Yankees should unload A-Rod you have some loose marbles. During A-Rod's MLB Career he has hit around .280 which is slightly below hs regular season average. A-rod can steal bases as well as hit for avg and power. A-Rod was a gold glove winning shortstop when he came to New York and switched positions to third to help the Yankees because they already had Derek Jeter. A-Rod is the best hitter in baseball and perhaps its best player. The Yankees problems have centered around pitching in recent years lets face it when you build your hopes around guys like Randy Johnson, David Wells, who were over 40 when they played for the Yankees as well as Clemmons this year your hurting. If the Red Sox management could bring in talent on less money the Yankees should have been able to as well because money is no object to big George. The Yankees have one young promising starting pitcher and the rest are well past their primes. If you want to blame anyone blame Steinbrinner he has the check book and there just has not been enough quality starting pitching in New York to win championships since A-Rod has been a Yankee. IF the Yankees get rid of A-Rod there only going to make their problems worse and will have another huge hole to fill on a roster that has huge problems. Since money for Steinbrinner is no issue and the fact over the next 2 seasons the Rangers will be paying 1/3 of A-Rod' contract to get get rid of the best offensive player in baseball would be foolish. If the Yankees are going to rebuild or should I say reload they need to buy some starting pitcher and look for a closer in the real near future. Roger G from Indy.

A-Rod can't produce in the big games or in critical situations. If he could, he'd be wearing 2 WS rings now. He chokes when the pressures on!
