Scott Boras Says Alex Rodriguez Sure to Make Over $30 Million

And who are we to challenge him? We wrote at the end of June -- thanks to a close study of Scott Boras' tactics by The Hardball Times -- that Alex Rodriguez was basically assured of a $30 million-per-year deal at the end of this season, provided he opts out of his contract with the Yankees. Now, Boras is openly setting the table for such a deal, right after the Yankees broke down and offered to negotiate mid-season:
After the New York Yankees on Wednesday indicated they would break from tradition and negotiate during the season with Alex Rodriguez on a contract extension, his agent moved in quickly to define what it would take to keep the superstar third baseman playing in New York. And that would be unprecedented millions per season.

Even if his client doesn't go the opt-out route, Boras told the Post that there are existing stipulations in the current deal that all but guarantee Rodriguez would earn a minimum of $32 million in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

"The way the provision operates, he either gets that or he can become a free agent after any of those seasons again," Boras told the newspaper.
As I said, who are we to challenge him? If Barry Zito can net $120 million, why can't A-Rod -- who's set to make around $27 million next year anyway -- bump his extension up to $30 million per year? That would set a new precedent for contracts for a second time in Rodriguez's career; if you can't win a World Series, that isn't such a bad consolation. At least, A-Rod's grandchildren will think so.
