Stephon Marbury is in the midst of a 37-city tour to promote his Starbury line of shoes and clothing for Steve and Barry's ... and what's even better, he's blogging about his experiences for the New York Post:After that we bounced through Charlotte. We stopped off at one of my favorite places to eat, Cracker Barrel. We met a nice lady named Lisa who worked there and told us the story of how she had promised her son she would buy him a pair of $175 Jordans even though she didn't want to. But he never had any brand name shoes. So she did it.First reaction: Marbury's favorite restaurant is the Cracker Barrel? Who knew? Second reaction: that's pretty bold of him to call out MJ, especially right in his backyard. I never would have thought it possible a couple of years ago, but Marbury seems to be on the verge of becoming a "larger than basketball" icon, having already called out MJ and LeBron James (see: "I'd rather own than be owned").
She wrote Michael Jordan a letter saying it was unfair a lot of children wouldn't be able to afford them and they shouldn't need Jordans to feel accepted.
She said they sent her a b.s. email back but that was it. I want Michael Jordan to get down with the movement and come out with a Star Jordan sneaker for the people. Let's see what happens.
We know Ben Wallace has already signed on with Starbury, but will athletes endorsing other companies follow in his footsteps? A month ago, word got out that Kevin Durant was adamant that his shoe contract included a commitment from either Nike or adidas to produce an affordable shoe that can be sold in the $39 to $69 range. Was that just p.r.-speak to make Durant look good, or did he really stick to his guns? We'll find out in a few months, Durant signed a deal with Nike this week.

Marbury needs to learn to keep his mouth shut, but I'm afraid that'll never happen. While it's noble to produce a sneaker line that's affordable to the masses, it's indicative of the quality; you get what you pay for. A cheap shoe that, on the surface, shows some flash, but is made of poor quality and falls apart in due time. Kind of like the man who represents it.

That mother should probably blame herself for not giving her son adequate social skills so that he would realize that he doesnt need Jordan's to fit in.
This makes me mad that people are constantly looking elsewhere to blame people for their problems. What? She couldnt stand up to her kid and say "no"? Isnt that the same problem that turned paris hilton into the unappreciative bitch that she is? Dont blame michael Jordan for being the best basketball player ever and bringing with that a level of success, namely the most successful shoe in history, not to mention, propelling nike into the superstratosphere of multinational companies for his endorsement. if anything, she should have complained to nike to lower the price of the shoe, i garuntee MJ probably doesnt even need the money anymore considering the thousand other places he is pulling cash in. Besides, its not like it is hard to go out and find ANY year of Jordan's shoe for a discount on one shelf or another. You can find cheap jordans everywhere, so buy those. THis lady and Marbury should shut the hell up, as usual. Go out and buy a pair of Jumpmans.

First off, I love this new bold, unbalanced, slightly crackish (google it) Marbury. He's even started blogging! I love it. This is much better than his previous surly jackass persona.
But yeah, I never really did get all the bitching about how expensive gym shoes are. I understand that the prices are super-inflated, as compared to how much it actually costs to produce them, but expensive Jordans are far from necessities for anyone. They're luxury items, and luxury items are often expensive. If you can't afford 'em, don't buy them. If your kid's self esteem is inextricably tied to wearing Jordan's, he may need to be re-programmed . . . or he might just need a job. Being deprived of health care or food or a decent education is a problem. Being deprived of flashy basketball shoes sewn together by 12-year old sweatshop workers . . . not so much. Kudos to Steph for offering a lower-priced alternative, but I don't think the high price of Brand Jordan sneaks makes MJ a villain.

FYI: For most who do not know, Jordans are proably made oversees by some child, or poor family getting paid like ten dollars for a 12hr day. Most of these big corporations use 3rd world countries to make their products that United States citizens buy. Jordan and every rich CEO are just getting more wealthy off of people buying their riduculus priced merchandise. Marbury is being real, and not fake like these other spoiled, ignorant,& non educated sports stars who think of themselves. Like Mike, Kobe, lebron, etc, etc.

Now for all those hopping down Steff's throat.....back the hell off because what he is trying to do is bigger than anything Michael has done. Yep I said it! Now growing up I had the luxury of having Air Jordans all the time. I have pics of myself before kindergarten and I had on Jordans. I like Michael the player, but he should have taken a stance like Steff is doing. For the guy who dissed the quality of the Starbury I suggest you go buy a pair and hoop in them for a few months, I have and guess what they are awesome kicks and fell good playing in.
Jordan never stepped in when his shoes where a big problem with inner city crime in the inner city. He turned his back and continued to let blood shed while he went and played golf.
Steff knows what it is like to grow up without much and that is why he helped create this line. You have guys like LeBron running around sounding like a damn Stepford Wife instead of taking a stance against social issues like his teammate.
Athletes want to claim they are not role models and that is the exact opposite. They are role models and its no way of getting out of it. You make millions off of these kids that you exploit with these shoe prices.
I commend Steff for what he is doing and for those that wanna diss him you know what you can do. That man is the start of a movement that a few of these other millionaire ball players need to join in on. Use your status to help push social issues and help others who made you rich instead of continuing to fill your pockets.

It's Jordan's responsibility to raise other peoples children?
Here's a revelation, just because a sports icon says, "but this." It doesn't mean you have to.

OMG FU JGSAILOR. That statement makes you about as ignorant as can be. Why you would lump Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James in the same category? Three totally different personalities, and are 3 different people. The only thing that connects the three is that one is michael jordan, and the other two wish they were michael jordan, although lebron is probably pretty cool with being lebron, even though he isnt jordan.
Michael Jordan on the other hand, whom i will defend even if he killed babies for a living now, i assure you probably doesnt even design his sneeks anymore, let alone set the prices and tell nike where to produce them, so please, your attempt to tie his successful marketing of a shoe because of his talent on the floor, to the selfish mistreatment of sweat shop workers is a joke.
Your Marbury love tells so much about you, it shouldnt surprise anyone that you would come up with such an assanine response. If you want to blame someone for sweatshops, how bout the government? or how bout the asian governments that allow children to work like this? At least those bitches have jobs, and im confident they are glad to be working in sweat shops, cause i bet it beats the hell out of starving or prostituting to gay men.
Everyone knows american products are made overseas, possibly in questionable situations, its cause no one in american wants to work those jobs. outsourcing, believe it or not, helps to rebuild poor countries by shocking their economy into life with money, and jobs.
Just a thought. But if you really think that marbury doesnt see any dollar signs coming from this endeavour, then you are totally shitting yourself moron.
Last i checked, MJ came from nothing as well, and he didnt carry himself like an unprofessional crybaby douche. if Marbury is a role model, then hiter is my idol.

actually, my cousin in Vietnam works at a Nike factory making these shoes. They get roughly $30 a MONTH working 10-12 hour days. If you're lucky and become a supervisor, manager maybe around $45/mt.

Steph has the right to speak because he's at the forefront of a movement that he has created. Michael never created a movement because he was the product.
If anyone can comment as to where the shoes are made, let's hear it because it will either be moot or icing on the cake if it's the same as Nike. If they're made in the USA then consider the arguments against null.

I'm not a big Marbury fan, but I actually agree with him on this. Jordan built himself into a legend on the court and a huge marketing brand off it, but he hasn't exactly given much back. A man of his stature is going to go down in history as a great basketball player and shoe salesman, and that's about it... which is a shame, because he could be doing so much more. He certainly doesn't deserve the unconditional (and fanatical) adoration of people like John S. above.

Shame on all of you. The African Americans cry all the time about being surpressed, They need to go to Asia where these people work for nothing and then they may have something to cry about. Sure Jordon is the greatest that ever played the game, he has made millions off these cheap ass shoes. Ali was the greatest boxer but he couldn't seem to find his way to the Armed Forces. To this day I will never spend a cent on Nike. Money is what runs this freakin country.

In response to RootZoo.com's message: Jordan sneakers are great. They are cool. They are EXPENSIVE and believe you me that its because of the name. Jordan sneakers are not what anyone whom ever played sports would rate a quality sneaker. On the contrary... Many kids wear them to school but kick on their NIKE's to ball. In addition, sneakers are made overseas for about $7.00. The rest goes to advertisements that catch people's interest in brand names and fool them into believe the price has all to do with the quality. Oh contrare my friend. If you don't believe me I'll tell you what... Go ball with a pair of Jordans on. Sure you look good. But you'll reply will change. That is IF, and only IF, you can get the sores on your feet healed. Don't confuse brand name with quality!

I love all the "my opinion is an uninformed stereotype" posts about shoe companies doing business overseas. How many of you have actually checked into what's going on for yourselves?
"In truth the work does look tough, and the conditions grim—if we compare Vietnamese factories with what we have in the West. But that’s not the comparison these workers make. They compare the work at Nike with the way they lived before, or the way their parents or neighbours still work. The average pay at a Nike factory near Ho Chi Minh City is $72 a month, almost three times the minimum wage for a state-owned enterprise."

John S. Ok I see your on Jordans nuts huh, lol. You sound like you come from a family of spoiled rich kids, just a guess? And I lump Jordan, Lebron, Kobe in this category because all have huge million dollar contracts with major shoe companies. And for your info idiot not everyone in America knows about 3rd world countries making a lot of the name brand clothes you wear. IM glad i touched a nerve in ignorant people like yourself, yes you! How, do you know that these familes oversees like being treated like slaves for some rich CEO in America? Have you ever been oversees to a 3rd world country and asked them how they felt? I have not either, yet I have taken college classes that go into this subject in depth, and your right about something I do blame our government for some of the things that go on. No shit shirlock, Marbury is getting paid, but not the likes of Jordan for his shoes. What I like about Marbury is that he has come from a ghetto and he is trying to make some things affordable for kids everywhere. And who is hiter, did you mean Hitler, idiot? Lates j
