The always-interesting Bugs and Cranks is back with another banger today -- this one celebrating the game's All-Afro team. The inclusions are wide-ranging, but one player, at least to me, stands out for his modernity: Da Meat Hook. LF - Dmitri YoungAbsolutely. What I most admire about Dimitri Young's beautiful locks is just that attitude. The older guys on the list -- the Eddie Murray's, for example -- combed and permed and treated their fros when that sort of thing was in style. In the 70's and 80's, everyone had a fro; even my grade school art teacher (who looked a bit like Sam Donaldson) once admitted to trying to grow out a fro to fit in.
"Da Meat Hook" has scaled it back quite a bit the past couple seasons but there was a time when you had to wonder if the man just rolled out of bed, looked in the mirror and smiled with a nod, "Hell, yeah. That's even better than yesterday."
Now, though? It takes a brave visionary to rock that style, son. Even if Dimitri's in braids now, the spirit of his fro remains.
