Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title holder Sean Sherk tested positive for steroids at UFC 73 -- and his opponent, Hermes Franca, did too. That's absolutely terrible news for UFC. The sport of mixed martial arts is still not considered legitimate by many fans, and the belief that its best fighters are fueled by steroids is one of the reasons. And Sherk was supposed to be one of the rising stars of UFC. Now he's likely to be stripped of his title and suspended for a year.
"Our policy on fighters using steroids, illegal drugs or any banned substance remains the same - you cannot use them," said UFC President Dana White. "It's not only unhealthy and unsafe, it is against the law. The UFC fully supports the commission's efforts and we will continue to take measures that keep this sport clean and keep the athletes safe."
During the UFC 73 live blog, I wrote of Sherk and Franca, These guys are packing as much muscle as you can possibly get on a 155-pound body. Now we know how they managed that.

This is really too bad. I am Sherk's height and delighted at his great performances in the welterweight class. As a professional desk jockey who lifts and does cardio, I can not approach Sherk's level of fitness, and attributed that to my lifestyle and genetics. I thought Sherk, like some of the really good natural bodybuilders I know, was doing everything naturally. I guess I was wrong about that. I guess I am now relieved of my illusions.

How can you believe these guys don't use steroids? When are people going to see through this garbage sport. You can go to any bar and see the same type of fighting.Same croud as the WWF WATCHES THIS. You know why this sport has caught on? Because anybody who is semi tough can do it. If you don't like to get hit you can roll around. Its a joke and always will be in my mind and many many others.

I have trained with Sean and I am sure he will release a statement soon. As for the guy saying that this sport has the same crowd as the WWE, well that does not mean it is not a sport. The outcome of the fights is NOT predetermined. It is unfortunate that people who don't fully understand the sport yet can criticize it so fully when they know nothing of what it takes, physically and mentally, to perform at that level. Shit< I don't know what it takes fully, go to a gym near you, go get you'r ass beat up and tell me how lame it is... These are professionals who train almost every day of their life. Sometimes you will see fights that are... "boring" but that is just because you don't understand the game, once you do... it's like watching kinetic chess. I always thought Sean was natural and I'm sure this sucks but he will come back .

So people don't think is legit because of performance enhancing drugs? You're an idiot. Not sure if you remember this but there were several starters on a Panthers team that made it to the Super Bowl doing steroids and HGH. Do people not consider the NFL a legitimate sport because of it?
There are reasons people don't get into UFC, but performance enhancing drugs isn't one of them.
If anything, this should so how much tougher the UFC is on steroids than EVERY other sport. In the NFL, you miss a fourth of a season; in MLB, you miss a third of a season; he's going to miss a year! Nick Diaz tested positive for weed and was suspended for 9 months. You think the NBA is testing for weed after every game?
I don't know why fanhouse allows an absolute moron that clearly knows nothing about the sport to blog on the UFC.

As someone that has followed the sport for many years, only recently coming back to it, and as someone who is a Muay Thai practitioner it saddens me that athletes feel the need to expand on the talent they have by means of steroids. Some individuals believe they need the extra boost but they just don't realize the consequences in the aftermath of getting caught.

I dont understand why they use them and think they're not going to get tested for them. Sean Sherk has obviously been using for a while. How come they only tested now?

I train in MMA and have seen how hard Sean Trains, I hope that things will be cleared up. I support Sean and all the MMA fighters and will do so until his guilt is determined, and will most likly support him after. Many of these so called BANNED substiance are not illegal and are found in tons of products, so my request is for restraint! And I wish the negitive JERKS would wait until all the facts are known!

ufc has caught on because its a fast pace a sport..unlike boxing and nascar it has action and drama with athletes who train harder than anyone... Sean Sherk testing postive is a shame but Hermes Franca his opponent test positive as well.. Thats like comparing a plate appearance with roger clemens and Barry Bonds

This is probly the last thing the sport of MMA needed. The UFC has to be sturn on the punishment to let the fans and other fighters know that this is in no way acceptable. If they are going to be tough on the Lightweight champion it lets all of the fights know that no matter who you are you won't get away with it. And just because a fight goes to the ground does not mean you are not going to be hit. Some devistating knockouts have taken place on the ground.

I KNOW SEAN AND HAVE TRAINED WITH HIM,AS A MATTER FACT I WAS WITH HIM LAST FRIDAY NIGHT. AND THIS IS JUST AS UNEXPECTED TO U AS IT IS TO ME! SEAN IS A VERY HONEST PERSON AND I'M SURE THEIR IS SOMETHING THATS NOT BEING SAID. IN HIS DEFENSE HE IS BY FAR THE MOST HARDEST, COMPETIVE , LOYAL, FIGHTER I'VE EVER MEET AND AM PROUD TO KNOW HIM. HE HAS THE MOST EXPLOSIVE TRAINING SESION U CAN IMAGINE. AND I HOPE AS NOT ONLY A FRIEND OF HIS BUT OF THE SPORT,(YES THATS RIGHT , SPORT) THAT THIS ALL GETS WORKED OUT. ME MYSELF BEING A FIGHTER I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY SUPPLEMENTS PEOPLE TAKE 2-3 TIMES A DAY THAT DON'T REALLY KNOW,WHAT THEY ARE TAKING JUST CAUSE THERES SO MANY THINGS IN THERE. MY HOPE IS FOR HIS DIRECT INNOCENCE. MAYBE HE DIDN'T REALLY KNOW THAT THIS SUPPLEMENT WAS ILLAGEAL? ANYWAYS I'M SURE IT WILL ALL COME TO PAST ON AUG 6.......TIL THEN I FULLY SUPPORT SEAN!

I like Sherk and I'm kinda surprised. But if any of you saw UFC All Access with him he had a huge bowl with about 50 different supplements, after seeing that i was questioning weatherer he used or not.

They use steroids to try and gain any advantage over thier opponent possible. It's all driven by the money, just like any SPORT. And for those that think MMA or UFC is like WWF, you obviously watch WWF and need to get back into your trailer and jerk off!

Has anyone considered the possibility that the TESTING method might be flawed? What is it anyway? I'm assuming it's a blood test correct? Hell, I can take an Advil for a headache & then test 'positive'!

umpalumpa29? You Really expect someone to believe he did not know. What ever happen to common sense. before you take any supplement wouldn't it be smart to find out what it is made of?Also, why do you need supplements could you do it without taking them (supplements). And they always knock boxing. Real Men Stand up and fight not lay on the ground and hump each other. Also, People need to stop knocking boxing when these guy try to box, until one get clipped then that when they go to humping each other or start kicking. They call it striking But we all no it what it really is (wanna be boxing). Come on PEOPLE think. This is nothing but streetfighting not mixed MARTIAL arts (KUNG-FU, KARATE, TAKEWANDO ETC...) COME ON PEOPLE START USING YOUR HEADS. These guys are not household names like boxers (Ali,Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr.) and never will be. Need I say more. they both can live in harmony TOGETHER. Thank you very much.

Test Flawed? Might be innocent? How did the fighters night test possitive up till now? Its all about money!!!!! Dana White would rather not know it would dip into his pocket. If any of you are athletes you can tell when someone is to muscular, or to cut up. You may choose to ignore it because he is a friend, or training partner or you idolize him or her. But please simpythy or "must be wrong because he's a nice guy" doesn't change reality. Its cheating!!! what about all those guys that bust there butts doing it the right way and don't get a shot because mr. Roid is bigger and stronger?
