Incredible news from the New York Post's Murray Weiss: the FBI is investigating an NBA referee believed to have been involved directly in a point-shaving scandal led by the mob.Sources tell Weiss the ref allegedly made explicit calls in at least 10 games he worked over the past two years to affect the margin relative to the spread. Weiss adds the feds are preparing to arrest the ref as well as his mob friends.
NBA Commissioner David Stern is supposedly aware of the investigation, but obviously won't comment. No FBI officials are directly quoted in Weiss' story, which relies on several anonymous sources. Bloomberg, however, got the head of the refs union to confirm the investigation is taking place.
This is an absolute atomic bomb for the NBA. As a fan, it's depressing more than anything. If what Weiss reports turns out to be true -- that the ref in question affected the outcome of more than 10 games -- it's worse than the Pete Rose scandal. This episode promises to be the biggest black eye for sports we've seen in a long time.
UPDATE: The Associated Press reports the allegedly crooked ref will turn himself in to authorities next week.
UPDATE #2: It's Tim Donaghy.

It will be a sad thing if this thing with the ref is true...It's unfortunate and frustrating to the teams and fans when the ref. seems to control the outcome of some games. There are so many questionable calls and obvious misses that it's hard not to think that the refs have a different agenda. They need to be held accountable and not given no much immunity. Games need to be reviewed by an unbiased committee to see if the refs are doing their job. There should be a report card for every ref and if they fail the grade over objectionable and questionable calls, then let them go...They make too much money not to do a superb job..

Just as we thought -- that's why the NBA is going down in ratings and in public attraction --- Stern got to go

This would be a sad sad event if this is true. Not only for Basketball, all professional sports. In Professional Basketball sometimes referee calls are very questionable especially when obvious travel violations are not called, pushing and shoving are allowed especially "Hard fouls". The finess of the GAME has been elimnated.

And now you know why any Maverick who came within 2 feet of Dwayne Wade in crunch time of the 2006 Finals was called for a foul.

This doesn't surprise me at all. The original NBA players must be spinning in their graves watching the way the game is played today. Maybe the FBI should widen their investigation to all pro sports, especially Baseball. Some of the "Umpires?" have to be on drugs or someone's payroll. Their ego's also need to be checked. It's the commissioner's fault they have an attitude that "THEY" ARE IMPOSSIBLE OF MAKING A BAD CALL". The worst part is the support from the front office. The players who speak up, right or wrong, are punished. Whwt about the "umpire?" who screws up? Is he EVER punished or suspended for his performance.

krause,
players make bad judgement calls, coaches make bad judgement calls and so do officials. You just hope it doesn't come at a crucial point in the game. Its part of the human element of sports.

I agree with you 100%. It just frustrates me when the NBA allows the obvious traveling and hard fouls to occur.Maybe I am out of touch with the game. I see it at the high school and college level. I did not play in that era.

(yawn) There are crooked refs in the NBA. Who would've thought it?
The only surprising thing about this story is that the mob payed the refs off, not Stern. Although I guess it's not point shaving if the boss tells you to do it.

This is going to be very tough for the NBA to recover if this investigation proves to be true. I had felt that the officiating has been bad the last couple of years so this may somehow explain why.
