NFL Bans 'Ookie' Jerseys, 'Pit Bull' Still OK

Although anyone can go to NFLShop.com and customize any jersey with their own name or the name of a player whose jersey isn't otherwise available, the league has long had a list of words that you can't put on a customized NFL jersey.

And Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that one of those words is Ookie, the nickname Michael Vick's family and -- according to a federal indictment -- his dog fighting co-conspirators call him.

When words that include "Ookie" or "Dog" are typed into the personalization database, a note pops up that says "Your current entry cannot be processed. Language deemed inappropriate, derogatory or profane will not be accepted. Please create a new entry."

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said that, in light of the current events, the words fell into the inappropriate category.

"Pit Bull" is still available, although I'm sure it won't be for long. "Mexico" has been banned since shortly after Vick's other nickname, Ron Mexico, came to light.
