Remember the United Football League? It's the brainchild of a few billionaires, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, and it currently plans to play pro football on Friday nights, starting in the fall of 2008.
The UFL isn't planning to spend huge money on stars, the way the old USFL did, but there's one star who might be available at a relatively modest price: Michael Vick. Let's say Vick is convicted of charges related to dog fighting and given a relatively short prison sentence, but a long suspension or even a lifetime ban from the NFL. Peter King of SI.com proposes that in that scenario, the UFL would go after Vick:
I wondered this week if that new football league -- you know, the Mark Cuban league -- would take Vick as its marquee player. Don't scoff. Imagine the TV ratings that league would get with Vick quarterbacking the New York Whoevers on Opening Night 2009.
Cuban has his hands full with the Mavs, and he might have his hands even fuller soon with the Cubs, so there's a chance that he'll decide to pull out of the UFL. But if this league does launch, and if Michael Vick is available, the investors would be crazy not to take a shot at him.
I e-mailed Cuban this morning to ask if he'd be interested in Vick; he has not replied.

1. Emailed Cuban? Does he ever reply?
I don't think he'd want to touch this Vick story.
