Patriots Training Camp Battle: Nick Kaczur vs. Ryan O'Callaghan

Training camp is finally here and FanHouse breaks down the most important position battles heading into the season, team by team.

Not surprisingly, the best team on paper doesn't have many holes heading into training camp. Almost every position is pretty much solidified (Vinny Testaverde still has a legit shot at the starting job ... as soon as he released from the old peeps home, hopefully before the regular season kicks off).

One position that's up in the air is right tackle. The Patriots drafted Nick Kaczur with their 2005 third-round pick, he started 11 games as a rookie, but only started nine games last year because of injuries. In his place, 2006 fifth-rounder Ryan O'Callaghan saw action in 11 games, starting six, before battling concussions.

Assuming both players can stay healthy, Kaczur appears to be the frontrunner: "Kaczur is the more athletic option ... while O'Callaghan is the more powerful run blocker."

Interestingly, this spring the Boston Herald speculated that the team was unhappy with Kaczur's focus and work ethic. Who knows if that was Bill Belichick's not-so-subtle way of sending Kaczur a message, or maybe it's nothing more than speculation.

Whatever, I fully expect Kaczur to be ready to go once camp starts later this week, and eventually win the job. Worst case for the Patriots: they have two competent starters at right tackle ... just like every other position on the roster. This could be a long season for Pats haters.
