With day two of Giants training camp set to begin, I'm going to take a look back at day one and all of the top stories.- As we all know by now, Michael Strahan was a no-show yesterday. He and Tom Coughlin continued to play phone tag, but they were not able to touch base for the second consecutive day. On the bright side, the Giants have scheduled a meeting with defensive end Simeon Rice for Monday. They may also take a look at 11-year veteran Marcellus Wiley.
- On the field, Eli Manning was the one generating all the talk. If not for this Strahan situation, he would have been the big story on day one. And unfortunately, it would not have been good. As has been the case for the majority of his young career, he looked extremely inconsistent out there. One minute he'd make a remarkable throw only to follow it up with an awful pass into double coverage.
- Other than Jared Lorenzen, all the quarterbacks were looking poor. He really seemed to be the only one to hit a grove and make good throws play after play. It's too bad this kid has such a slow release because he appears to have the goods to play at this level.
- Although he didn't really stand out in the morning practice, rookie wide receiver Steve Smith dazzled in the nightcap. He made a brilliant diving grab at the 30-yard line that wowed the crowd and amazed the coaches.
- Despite the rumors of him returning to defensive end, Mathias Kiwanuka spent the entire day practicing as a linebacker.
- One of the greatest sights for Giants fans was the return of wide receiver Amani Toomer. He seemed to turn back time yesterday, making impressive catches and running without hesitation.
"He was good," Tom Coughlin of Toomer said. "I tell you what was really interesting was that Amani ran the conditioning test really well. I don't know if I was prepared to see him do it that well. He made all ten times and he did it with some style and some endurance. Then to be able to see him come out and have a practice in which, to be honest with you, there was no quarter asked and none really given."- Free safety James Butler practiced with the first team yesterday.
- David Diehl remained at left tackle.

To me the most significant thing yesterday is the good news about Toomer. It's too early to make any real conclusions, but positive results by Smith or any other rookie are good to hear.
Hefty!...Hefty!...Hefty!...I got creamed on mvn when I suggested that Hefty should have had more game snaps last year. But I never meant that as a slam on Eli. I just figure it just might make it difficult to save a game some day if Eli has to come out for an injury at a critical moment and your #2 quarterback has only taken two or three game snaps in three years.

Take this to hhe bank!
Eli will be a QB more in the mold of Bret Farve, than he will be like Payton. So get use to it!
In the last two years he has had close to 600 yards in drop passes- he put us in position to win 4 more games last year if the Defense could have come through and stopped a couple of drives. The kid will leed us to the promise land more than once.
There where only three QB's that had better stats than Lorenzen coming out of his conference. All where first round players. Tim Couch, Payton Manning, and Eli!Yes he has a future!

Of course I wish Eli could be more consistent, but for now at least, I want to chalk it up to knocking the rust off. Everyone says he has put in a lot of work this offseason, so I'm going to be patient and hopefully we can all watch it develop into something good going into the season.
As far as the Hefty Lefty, Lorenzen, I do think that his chunky butt could take more snaps and could really rise as an asset to this team, especially in the event Eli has to come out for any reason. I think him simply being a left handed QB will force many of the oppositions to have to make serious adjustments for that alone (i.e. weakside/strongside personnel). We've got dependable WRs on both sides now that Amani "it's not a" Toomer is back :-)!!! I'm PUMPED about this season even with ALL the negative stuff coming to surface. Keeping hope alive in enemy territory - JD in Dallas

Does Eli being inconsistent surprise anyone?? Think we need to face the fact that Eli's career is going to be marred with inconsistencies and he'll never be as good as his expectations.

Hey guys...If Eli doesn't have any fire at the start of camp....he never will...mark my words..I don't know what week or what series of games it will be, but we all will be calling for Mannings head to placed on the chopping block. He still(after 3 yrs)looks like he is watching like the deer in the headlights and always confused. Believe me, I and all of you would like to see this all go away, but???

It's too early to be reaching any conclusions about Eli. The Giants are still figuring out who will play left tackle and at the guards, there isn't any hard contact running yet so the defense is playing more for the pass, and maybe it's so hot and humid that no one can put out 100% yet. Let's all relax and see what happens in the first few games of the season (or at least wait for the exhibition games) before you get ready to run Eli out of town. Good to hear Lorenzen looks good but don't forget that his release is slow and he still needs work on technique too. There shouldn't be any QB controversy. The Giants are going to live or die with Eli and he's going to have to get at least this entire season (and probably next one) to find his groove. If by then he's a bust, so be it. I think by then he'll be an excellent QB who occasionally makes a bad throw. Sounds a bit like Favre or Elway or Simms or Steve Young, doesn't it? Let's not stay typical New York fans and hold him to a standard no one could meet.

the giants need to face a reality they may of made a huge mistake in accriring manning and trading rivers they had seen what archi manning did with the saints and payton did with the colts and thier eyes widened rivers is by far a better qb than manning tou can work with him all you want he will never be more than what he is now and he is the giants highest paid player at around 9 mill we have four qbs that arenot to much to talk about. since quinn is holding on the browns they should start talking lorenzo is probably the better of the four so we should start some bargaining and try to get quinn
