Day number two has just ended and I was so excited about some of the news that I decided to make this an evening thing rather than a morning thing. If you'd like to keep up on all "Giants Training Camp Notebook" updates, just click the link and bookmark that bad boy.- Ralph Vacchiano of "The Blue Screen" says the Giants have no intentions of sitting around and waiting for Michael Strahan. Although the scheduled meeting with Simeon Rice has been postponed until Tuesday, New York will pursue a contract when he arrives.
- Will Demps has been "demoted" and he's not exactly happy with it. James Butler has been practicing with the first team in his place.
"My track record speaks for itself," Demps said. "It's real early. I'm not going to say, 'OK, he's the starter,' because we haven't played any games. I'm healthy and I'm in the best shape I've been in. This is the guy I felt I should've been last year."- Sam Madison missed a few plays today due to cramping, but it's nothing serious.
- Osi Umenyiora looked brilliant during the morning practice. He made newly converted left tackle David Diehl look like a rookie on a few plays and was constantly in Eli Manning's face. To Diehl's credit, it's still early in his transition and Umenyiora is pro bowl defensive end.
- The players love the new defensive scheme being called by Steve Spagnuolo. As a Giants fan, I could not be more thrilled to hear that. Tim Lewis who?
- Jared Lorenzen continues to impress. For the second straight day he was by far the most accurate quarterback. On the plus side, Anthony Wright, Eli Manning and Tim Hasselbeck all looked much better than they did yesterday.
Rapid Fire:
- Guy Whimper has looked awful.
- Rich Seubert caught a touchdown on a botched field goal attempt.
- Cornerback Travonti Johnson, defensive tackle Marcus Bell and wide receiver Marco Thomas are making good impressions so far.
- Aaron Ross, the Giants first-round draft pick, looks like the rookie he is.
- Mathias Kiwanuka has been facing some hard times so far. However, the coaches seem pleased with him.

The Giants wanted to and are getting competition at all positions that’s what Reese did during the off season. Good for us, the best 11 will play defense this coming season and that’s why I say we will win the division.
I have been a BIG Reese supporter but I’m not sure why he’s being so impatient with Stray. Even his teammate's say be patient!
Man, the guy has given the Giants all he has for 14 years and is headed to the Hall. Now slap him in the face by bringing in Rice. Come on Jerry lighten up!
Me I’d give him more incentives. The Giants without him have been at best an OK team!
N.
Bradshaw is opening a lot of eyes ...this was a great draft. Two maybe three guys will be all-pros!

As a transplant in Florida, you satisfy the only thing that I miss. I had four for years on the 32, two rows off the Giants bench. May just do it again and fly back thanks to your excellent reporting.

Way too early to be reaching any conclusions, but it's good that Butler is getting time with the starters. I think that Spags must be thinking that he wants a bigger guy (Butler) playing strong safety and using Wilson as the free safety who can also rush from the edge like Brian Dawkins did for him in Philly. I don't know if that will work out, but if it does I like Demps as a spot player who can definitely help a lot. As for Madison, I'm still hoping that Webster can hold down the corner and Ross will compete hard to put Madison in a nickel-back position. If Webster can't make it in the new defense then I guess he's just never going to be the strong cover corner he looked like coming out of LSU. He was lost in an unaggressive zone under Lewis' coaching but this is the defense he ought to be able to play in successfully. He's a big key over the next few years. That defensive backfield needs serious shoring up.
Dan, keep sending info on the play at left tackle, at linebacker and in the defensive backfield. Those are the make-or-break areas other than seeing if Eli can take a big step up (which he won't be able to do if the left tackle position isn't strengthened).

The way it is looking to me is they will release Demps. It doesn't make any sense to keep a high priced Demps as a backup. This is good news we are getting younger and quicker. I am still pissed to this day at Demps for blowing coverage on Witten in that Dallas game.
