Theismann on Kornheiser: 'Tony Wanted to Quit. I Encouraged Him to Stay With It'

Tony Kornheiser was terrible last year in his first season as a Monday Night Football analyst, showing none of the humor, intelligence and insight that make him great on Pardon The Interruption and his various radio gigs. Today his former broadcast partner, Joe Theismann, suggests in an interview with the Washington Post that Kornheiser realized things weren't working out:

"In the middle of the season, Tony wanted to quit," Theismann said. "I encouraged him to stay with it."

If that's true, Theismann did a big disservice to football fans everywhere -- we deserve to have announcers who know what they're talking about in the Monday Night Football booth. Kornheiser showed up in the booth every week unprepared and ignorant of basic information about the teams. When Kornheiser wanted to quit, Theismann should have said, "You're right. You're awful. Quit now."

Of course, Theismann wasn't much better, and when ESPN fired Theismann and replaced him with Ron Jaworski, it took an enormous step in the right direction. Now let's hope Jaworski succeeds where Theismann failed -- either by teaching Kornheiser how to say something informative about football, or by telling him to do it the next time he says he wants to quit.
