How much do the Chiefs hate Brady Quinn right now?As Quinn, the 22nd overall pick of the Cleveland Browns, continues his holdout, so does Dwayne Bowe, the 23rd overall pick of the Chiefs. And it's widely assumed that Bowe and his agent have decided not to sign on the line that is dotted until Quinn signs, figuring that if Quinn gets an above-market deal, Bowe might be able to use that fact to get one for himself.
So the Chiefs' front office no doubt wishes Quinn would just sign a fair-market value contract with the Browns already.
It's the latest example of why the NFL desperately needs to adopt a salary structure for rookies that's modeled after the NBA's. Did you notice how you didn't hear anything about Greg Oden or Kevin Durant holding out? That's because in the NBA, everyone knows that there's no negotiating -- you're paid based on your draft slot, and you've got a chance to make more after you complete your rookie contract.
Until the NFL and the players' union follow the NBA's lead, we're going to have a lot of guys like Quinn and Bowe, and a lot of angry teams like the Browns and Chiefs.

Football is different, Quarterback is a huge position compared to the other postions and football contracts aren't guaranteed.(except the bonus) Also when your rookie contract ends in basketball most players are about to start their prime with many years to make great money. In football by the time a rookie contract ends a player maybe broken down.

Totally agree on NFL following the NBA lead in paying rookies w/o experience. Quinn ought to know better than to hold out, considering he was NOT a first round highlight pick. Bowe? Who's Bowe? First time heard about that guy. At least Quinn has some established college cred.

regis ruin,
For your information, Dwayne Bowe has MUCH MORE credibility ON THE FIELD than Brady Quinn. He may not be the calendar boy that was hyped up by the media like Quinn, but he had WAAAAAAAY more success for his position than Brady Quinn...
Check the Sugar Bowl where Duane Bowe and his LSU Tigers STOMPED Brady Quinn and his media-darling overrated Irish.
Media coverage doesn't make a player great or give him credibility where it counts... on the field.

c'mon. chiefs fans--and the chiefs--should dislike bowe's AGENTS, who are blatantly waiting to piggy-back on whatever deal condon negotiates for brady. not sure how they can EVER recruit another player, given their joel segal-esque tactics. man up, locke and metz, man up, or you won't see another first rounder for a long, LONG time.
segal made his 3% on the landry contract by simply adding a straight $500k to the contract ben dogra negotiated for adrian peterson's contract. please, please give me segal's job.

the contention that the NFL "desperately needs to adopt a salary structure for rookies" is ludicrous. any such change would be subject to collective bargaining, and upshaw won't agree to something that diminishes the ability of his players to negotatiate their rookie deals for untold numbers of reasons. if the only justifications for implementing such a structure are (1) it eliminates negotiations and (2) billy hunter agreed to it, there is a fundamental failure of logic.

Hey Regis?
Here's a clue to you- Quinn will have a longer career then Bowe. It's the nature of the QB position vs the WR position.
So, quitcherwhinin'

Such BS. I totally agree with the rookie contratc ceiling like the NBA. why should these Prima Donas get top dollar after proving absolutley NOTHING on an NFL field. Mcgown, Couch, Ware, etc. are bust and their teams were left holding the proverbial crap bag. I guess it isn't enough that these "student" atheletes get to get a free college education (whuch is a good $50K right there if not mre depending on the school, USC 2X that) unlimited access to ridiculous women groupies, and preferential treatment b/c they play a sport.
you guys are right they deserve more.
