The afternoon, Adrian Chip (5-1 morning odds) will attempt to become the second Swedish horse to win the annual Hambletonian at the Meadowlands Racetrack -- a $1.5 million harness race in its 82nd year. The horse is owned by none other than Peter Forsberg, who purchased it in 2006; with that in mind, expect Adrian Chip to dive to the dirt and hope to win by objection should it fall a few lengths off the lead near the finish line. The bigger news today is that Forsberg himself appears to have gotten back on the horse. ("We bow to you, oh King of the Transitional Sentence.") Adrian Dater of the Denver Post has tracked down details of the 34 year old's return to the ice after off-season surgery on his right ankle. Forsberg scored two goals and had three assists in a charity game in Helsinki; Dater wonders where he'll be playing this fall:
The former Hart Trophy winner is an unrestricted free agent, and prompted speculation he might want to return to the Avalanche when he spoke glowingly of Colorado after the final game of the regular season at Denver. The Avs are about $5.6 million under the NHL's $50.3 million salary cap.George James Malik's MLive.com Red Wings blog, where I found Dater's story, has details of a plea made by Philadelphia's Simon Gagne to Forsberg, asking him to return to the Flyers. While the Flyers and Wings would clearly be in the mix for Forsberg, my heart tells me if it's anywhere, it's Colorado -- one last run to the Cup with Joe Sakic. My FanHouse buddy Jes Golbez had his take on that theory recently, too.
There has been speculation that the Detroit Red Wings would be interested in Forsberg if he decides to play in the NHL this season. But the Swedish star said he hasn't been in contact with any NHL clubs and still isn't sure if he will play in the NHL this season.

I went to the race. Adrian Chip was just like #21, started out in the lead, fell way back in the middle, and came up well too short at the end.
