Don't ask us sports fans to explain our assorted attachments. I keep all my ticket stubs; if you looked hard enough in my old junk, I'm sure you could find a Indiana-Northwestern football ticket from 2003. Why I have this, I'm not sure, but why throw them away, right? Apparently, several Mets fans are feeling the same way about the Shea Stadium Apple, the one that pops up whenever the Mets hit a home run. The new Shea will have "some sort of apple," but the picky fans at SaveTheApple.com want The Apple, and they're organizing to make it happen:
The Mets did say that while they have made their decision for now, it's not impossible that the issue could be revisited. And that's where you (and we) come in. Sign the petition! Spread the word to everyone you know: every Mets fan, every New Yorker, every baseball fan; every Mets blog/fan-site, every New York blog, every baseball blog. If you have contacts in the mainstream media, tell them about our cause. Send them here, send them to the petition, help us Save the Apple, your Apple, our Apple, the Mets' Apple.Don't get discouraged. We're not gonna stop fighting and you shouldn't either.
I would scoff and laugh at this, but like I say, we all have our attachments. Excuse me while I go reorganize my beer bottle collection by each brewery's geographical location. Might be a couple of days.

2. It's simply amazin' that Met fans want to keep the ugliest and tackiest feature of the hideous Flushing Bowl and bring it over with them to their new ballpark, which looks like will be a classy, beautiful place. Let the apple go, guys. Bringing it to CitiField would be like putting plastic flamingoes on the lawn of a mansion.

4. Both myself and my family including my son grew up associating the apple with the Mets and with the home runs. This is part of the history of the Mets from my very young days of Ron Swoboda, Ed Kranepool to Mike Piazza to today"s Beltran and Wright. DON'T TAKE AWAY PART OF THE HERITAGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE METS FROM STENGAL TO TORRE. PLEASE !!!!!!!!

6. Uh, dude. The Apple's only been around since 1980. No Stengal or Swoboda.
That said, I love the damn thing. Save the Apple.

7. The Apple is the only distinguishing feature in Shea Stadium! Everything else is boring and ho-hum... but the apple is the one thing that seperates Shea stadium from all of the other late 60's early 70's ash tray and tuna can stadiums.
