The Southern Christian Leadership Conference will gather to celebrate the organization's 50th anniversary this evening, with other festivities running through Wednesday. As part of their get together, the SCLC will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the promise of Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama and the ... Well, the something of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.Although the SCLC did not specify how it will honor Vick, they did claim he would be recognized at some point.
"We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us," President Charles Steele said.Michael Vick? Seriously?
I honestly do not recall Vick "opening his heart" to the SCLC, but I could have easily missed it. Either way, I am baffled as to how they could even mention Vick's name in the same sentence as Martin Luther King Jr. or Barack Obama, let alone honoring him at the same event.
I'll be quite anxious to see how they end up spinning this public relations stunt.

Michael Vick has the best legal minds working for him, he'll have the best jury consultant picking his jury...if he's innocent, he AND his supporters have nothing to worry about.
Hmmm, why are his supporters so worried?
Does anyone believer Vick didn't engage in dogfighting? Vick supporters are basically saying: there are worse crimes then dogfighting, so why pick on Vick?

I call on the SCLC to do a little research on what the growth of Dog Fighting has done to American communities over the past decade. www.animallaw.info/articles/ddusdogfighting.htm. It is tied to serious problems in rural and urban neighborhoods: organized crime, racketeering, drug distribution, and gangs. Even seasoned law enforcement people are appalled by the acceptance of brutal treatment to animals before, during, and after dog fights. Kids exposed to this level of violence are conditioned to believe that it is normal and making it easier to become criminalized. Although Vick has been indicted, not yet convicted, of a felony involving unlawful animal fighting, this is not activity to be honored.

Mike's lawyer likely advised him to post a large "charitable contribution" to the church in exchange for some good press.
Sickening, what churches have become.

I can't believe these Christians would Honor this sadistic bastard with no redeeming qualities. They are black Christians and it's pure racism on their part when the only reason they defend and embrace Sick Vick is that he's black & an NFL QB. They don't care about his participation in dog fighting and the worst level of animal abuse most have ever heard of. They refuse to acknowledge the fact that he owned animals that were found scarred injured starved & murdered on his property & at his Bad Newz Kennels. They are not honoring, they are making excuses & blindly worshipping a black man who's made it in the world. Well he didn't make it after all, his career is done & reputation ruined. Companies like Nike & Reebok dropped him like the plague. His bloodthirsty passion for dogfighting will be the only thing he's remembered for.

they better do some deep soul searching. what is christ-like about tortuing and getting off on the terror and pain of animal GOD gave his name spelled backwards because of his unconditional love toward man? this is just disgusting. what has vick done to walk the talk of a christian? his behavior is christ-like? may GOD please have mercy on us all if these people are leading our christian communities. and may GOD have mercy on their compassionless souls for not having any empathy on
beings who are more vulnerable than they are. GOD help us all.

The SCLC is a racist, discriminatory organization, pure and simple.

Dear Mr. Steele,
There must be a more qualified and dignified black person that you would bestow your support behind.
What about, teachers, Doctors, day care workers, everyday Mothers struggling to make ends meet, college graduates that accomplished things against all odds.
Not multimillionaire, low life dog murdering nobodies that lead a horrible example to young people. The future of your church and our country.
In Gods name what are you thinking. You should be ashamed. I am questioning your judgement and influence and am asking for you to step down.

Keep your head up high Micheal Vick. The white haters who hate you are the same preople who would walk by a homeless person and spit on him before they would help him. These people are not human. They care more about their dogs than a black man. That's sad.

boo! on the alledgelly "southern christian leaders".
yall are zeroes. -0-. honor is something you deserve and earn. killing and causing dogs tremendous pain intentionally is honorable? i agree with #3 ben- yall must have received a donation from vick. remember though, money is the root of all evil. and i also agree with #8 mike- yall should be ashamed of yourselves. i have now lost all respect for your organization.

to purple people- there is a difference between helping someone and honoring them. and if you don't know the difference how sad for you. and comparing people who have convereted to christianity does nothing for vick. so shut the hell up until you are able to have an intelligent conversation.

if i were barack obama, i would say "thanks but no thanks". what a joke. i would be embarrased to have my name associated with vick's name in any way, shape or form. mr obama, send a message to the slc and tell them cruelty is not acceptable no matter who the victim. and you will not associate with an organization who condones cruelty.

I don't like Mike at all but this church organization is doing what a church is supposed to do...forgive and support a sinner. If it is just for a donation, it doesn't matter. It is still the right thing to do.

Hello! The apostle Paul who wrote a majority of the new testament was murdering christians before his conversion. Jesus himself hung out with "sinners" and was questioned by the religious leaders for his actions. I'm sure SCLC does not endorse dog fighting! IF Vick is found guilty the church should be the very ones reaching out to him to help him! Not shun him.
