Not that it would've much mattered this week, but it's just one more thing to point to when you make the "Man, God sure does hate Sergio Garcia" argument. The golfer formerly known as El Niño was disqualified following today's round for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Now we can argue the inanities that are the rules of golf, but right or wrong, the fact that Garcia couldn't add means he'll be on his way out of town a day earlier than expected. Before the DQ, Sergio was 9-over for the tournament, and his 54th hole pretty much was a microcosm for his week.
After a great second shot to the 18th green, Garcia promptly three-putted from four feet, and even took time between the fourth and fifth strokes to glare into the gallery. This motivated TNT analyst Bobby Clampett to preach to the choir (and I'm paraphrasing): "Garcia has to quit blaming other ... events for his predicaments. Once he takes responsibility, he'll start fulfilling his potential."
I think we all agree with Clampett. Unfortunatly, Garcia won't get a chance to start working on the New and Improved Sergio until next week. You know, because he got disqualified and all. But hey, he's still got it better than Rory Sabbatini, who, in the span of a few months, has become more reviled than Shooter McGavin.

1. Sergio was 5 over and had made the cut and was only through 36holes.

2. Me,
Sergio carded a 74 today before the DQ. Technically, the Saturday round doesn't count (hence the disqualification), but that doesn't mean he didn't shoot 4-over today, and was unofficially 9-over for the first three days of the tourney. That was my point; I should've been more clear.

3. Poor Serg.... I think he's had a rough couple of weeks. He's a GREAT golfer, despite what all of the armchair golfers out there might believe.
The guy is plagued with a curse! He needs to forget his past, and move forward and start anew!

4. If they already knew his score total then why does he even need to fill out a scorecard?

5. Sergio is such a looser! I lost all respect for him since he spit into the cup at a PGA event earlier this year, and simply shrugged his shoulders when called down upon it. What goes around comes around. Perhaps this is payback for his disgusting lack of sportsmanship. He should have been DQ'd for the rest of the season.

6. He needs to go back to school and learn basic math.
The tv announcers were all over him today saying that he needs to stop blaming everyone for his problems but himself.

7. You people don't know JACK, especially when the story here is half told by a certain Ryan Wilson.
It's Sergio's playing partner, Boo Weekley, who penciled down a 5 instead of a 4 for the score of Sergio on the 17th hole. Yes, it's their playing partners who put the score, not the player themselves.
While Sergio should have verified the scorecard, this DQ is completely stupid.

8. Disqualifing Sergio Garcia for an incorrect scorecard written by his golf partner is like giving the death penalty for perjury.

9. One of the strange things about golf is that each player is responsible for his own score, but he does not write it down.
I haven't seen anything about Weekley being disqualified though - he must have signed it as well, being the marker. Mustn't he?
And if he signed it as well, then that's also a DQ offence as I understand it. Although as he's an American, that rule might not apply to him.....
Only (half-)joking here............

10. Should have checked my facts.....it's not a dq offence to write down the wrong score for someone else.
A bit strange tho isn't it? It must be tempting to put an extra shot or two on Tiger's card, and there's no sanction against the marker for that.....

11. I hope both Sergio and Boo learned a hard lesson this week. I think Boo should have been DQ'd as well, then maybe he would have been more careful before penciling in an incorrect score. Sergio is a great player, and he is one of the many reasons I view professional golf tournaments every weekend. Sorry for the misfortune SErgio, but it's time to forget about it and move on. See you at the Tour Championship.

12. In fact, this "rule" has nothing to do with a desire to keep the score accurately - that is not at all important. If Sergio had signed his card with a higher score, he would not be DQ'd and would still be playing. The obvious implication is that it is okay to be stupid, just not okay to be stupid enough to cheat. You know, sorta like you can be dumb enough to wear long pants playing in heat over 100 degrees. It is no wonder many people think the game is for non-athletic geeks.

13. The PGA Scoring System defies logic when you look at the available technology. However, it is what it is. Each player is responsible for their score and their playing parner's score. At the end of the round, one part of a two part scoring card is detached and exchanged. Players verify one with the other. Obviously, Garcia did not.

14. Sergio doesn't even have to add up the score, just make sure the correct 18 numbers are written down. I'm guessing this is the last time he'll miss doing this.
I've officiated golf for many years I only see a player make this mistake once, unless they want to get DQed.

15. It's hard to imagine this happening. These guys know the penalty.

16. Ryan should really study the situation before writing stupid stuff. He made the mistake thinking Boo could count to 5.

17. LB,
Well crafted.

18. Sergio needs to quit blaming what happens to him on the course, the weather, other players, etc. Every golfer who's ever played in a tournament knows the rule about signing your scorecard. Just ask Roberto DiVincenzo (get Googling, you kids under 50). He actually complained about his ball caroming away when it hit the pin the British Open playoff. If it hadn't hit the pin, he'd have gone over the green. He's got A talent and a D attitude.

19. Well despite all the bad days Sergio has had on the course he is still a wonderful player, and the hottest on the course!!!!

20. Let's face it, whether Sergio can add or not, he's not what I consider a good representative of the PGA. He dresses like Doug Sanders, but plays like Colonel Sanders! He's way too hot-headed to be playing in the PGA.
