I have no video or audio to offer, but that doesn't make Rick Sutcliffe's drastic, off-kilter revelation in tonight's Yankees-Angels game on ESPN2 any less entertaining. To set the scene: a few innings after A-Rod's home run, Sutcliffe and partner Dave Brennan discuss the various merits of showboating after hitting a long run, especially in the case of David Ortiz's extended stroll after a home run over the weekend. (Ortiz took a really, really long time to break into his slight jog.) Of course, this type of showboating is blasphemous to Sutcliffe, who not only was a pitcher but who was in the middle of professing his belief that baseball today isn't the "same game" because people feel more inclined to showboat today than they did in the past.
And then, apparently as a method of supporting his point, Sutcliffe breaks into the real gem: his story about Reggie Jackson. Paraphrased, it went a little like this:
Sutcliffe: You know, that happened to me one time. I wanted to kill Reggie Jackson.
Brennan: Really?
Sutcliffe: Yeah. He hit a home run off of me, and stared at it. I was hot. I was furious. I was in the dugout, and I was going to throw at him the next time he came up. And then my guy Burt Blyleven came up to me and said "Sut, he's hit 500 of those things. He's earned the right to stare at it when it leaves the park." But I was furious.
Brennan: Well, the rules are slightly different today.
Sutcliffe: Because I was going to throw at his head. I was going to throw at his face, if I could hit it! I was going to kill him if I could.
Brennan: ... stunned, awkward silence ...
And ... scene! Lessons: Burt Blyleven saves lives. And showboating -- even in an era when nobody supposedly showboated -- can get you killed, son.

Sutcliff might have a roster spot on the Long Island Ducks. He can share his stories with Offerman about the proud days when pitchers and batters felt free to maim each other without the possibility of jail time.

I don't blame pitchers like Sutcliffe and others who have had to put up with the antics of egomaniacs like Jackson - especially after growing up and seeing ballplayers who had class - the Aarons, the Banks, the Mays and Robinson's - today's black ballplayers (Sheffield, Bonds, Sosa, etc..) are all about themselves - and what they can get (notariety, money, etc. It's as if they have to show someone else up in order to secure more attention than what's necessary for themselves. There needs to be more Nolan Ryans out there - someone willing to nail one of these arrogant bastards in the head and then whip their ass when they come out to the mound - I'd like to see that. Now, on the flip side - I truly hope to see Adam Dunn kick the piss out of that human piece of garbage Zambrano of the Cubs. Just whip that punk and make him piss his panties. THAT would qualify as a Top 10 play of the season!

I'LL add mine! I was on a cross country flight (NY-California) the day Reggie was suspended by the Yanks. He was my seatmate in first class and told me not to bother him. I said ok and went up to the upper deck of the 747 Soon Jackson came up and asked me to move over so that he sit down. I said to him I thought that you did not want to be bothered so neither do I. He threw a tantrum and all I said was ok I will move to another seat and that I did. Thanks Reggie.

Zambrano, Reggie, T.O., they all believe it's about them and not about the team. It's ruining sports. Maybe if there were more Sutcliffs these self centered punks wouldnt get away with this crap.

Malicious Mojo- You might want to reserve some space on the Ducks roster for Roger Clemens also. Talk about an a--hole. Fact is, Reggie was an egomaniac playing for egomaniac manager who worked for an egomaniac owner who owned a team that played in a city full of egomaniacs. I only wish he could have beaned Billy and George in the head also (about a 98 mph fastball would have done the trick).

Reggie had nothing to worry about. Sutcliff couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a cannon.

Hey Postman E can you really tell me why this is newsworthy, let alone blogworthy? This type showmanship has been going on in baseball since its beginnings. It's archaic but nonetheless baseball. Please write something of some significance about the sport. Don't write pablum that only panders to the problem. Give us some insight, some thoughtful ideas. We all know that you can't or won't! You just want to make a name of yourself with your controversial pablum. Please enlighten your readers with some substance about baseball.

My apologies for writing "pablum that panders to the problem." Please don't let this prevent you from partaking in pointed particulars of professional postmodern sports. My main momentary mindset is one of sincere, unsolicited sorrow, and I hope you will continue to court the current content available on our abominable, arbitrary website.
Pointedly pablumic,

I think it's a great story. I know Sutcliffe rarely threw at batters when he pitched in Chicago, but he had more of a temper in Cleveland and LA. I don't know how fast he could throw when he pitched with Cleveland, but he did have a good fastball before he developed arm problems in 1985. I can't imagine a Sutcliffe fastball in the face circa 1983 would feel good.

Reggie Jackson was here in Baltimore in 1976. And one of the most memorable things about that year, to me, was he challenged a local TV sports personality to a public fight. The one person who didn't show up for the fight was Reggie Jackson :).

Why does it always come down to race with someof you guys? It's funny how white ppl revere legends like Hammerin'Hank.Willie Mays,etc... NOW! Henry Aaron was receiving death threats in the 70's for daring to break a record. As for Sutcliffe.. do you ppl really support that train of thought? If you don't like it, simply throw better pitches.

One would think a national analyst like Rick Sutcliff would know better than to make a threat about a person in the realm of having a desire to kill them.
Aside from all the wrong attached to this, there are potential racial implications that deepens what's wrong about Sutcliff's harsh thoughts.
If Reggie Jackson's showboating is not good for baseball and serves as no positive example for kids; does Sutcliff think his admition to commit murder is a better example?

So pitchers can pump their fists and go nuts when they strike someone out or close out a game, but batters can't watch a long home run?

Let's see it's todays black and latino ballplayers that are the problem. I guess I need to take off my rose colored glasses and go to the back of the bus.

Diggler - Funny you should use a well-hung "white-boy" character's name for your username. Also, newsflash - it is because of the way you "ppl" (too lazy to type, or can't spell it)act that turns off "normal white folk". Don't act like you are deserved something and instead act like you have have manners and have been there before and maybe you will get and see the respect that is equivalent to the action.
