How anonymous was Wake Forest football before last year? Last fall, a restaurant manager-in-training mistook Jim Grobe and the WFU coaching staff for a group of Waffle House corporate employees and wouldn't accept any other answer from them. Considering the kind of Type A personalities that make up most of the college football coaching fraternity, it says a lot about Grobe that instead of ripping the poor mis-informed guy's head off - he played along with the joke, even going to the point of getting the "Property of Waffle House Athletic Department" shirts made, one of which you can see him wearing in the photo above from the Winston-Salem Journal.Wake is a very unique situation compared to most BCS programs, a tiny private school with two much larger state schools in near proximity - not necessarily the normal recipe for a dominant football program. Grobe and his easy going personality fits the school like a glove though, and he's done a remarkable job building the entire program in his and the school's image. Wake might not repeat as ACC Champions this year, but you can guarantee that Grobe's team be competitive and hungry ... and not just for some scattered, smothered and covered hash browns.
