ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will not be "extreme" in his suspension of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, and that anyone who thinks Vick will be suspended for life is wrong. Goodell also has told Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players' Association, that he will "have an open mind" about Vick's ultimate discipline from the league. The source said it would be a mistake to assume that Goodell will be extreme with Vick's jail sentence, saying anybody who is talking about a lifetime ban for Vick or even a three-year suspension is sadly mistaken.
Mortensen is a good reporter, but he's using an anonymous source here, and it may well be the same anonymous source he was relying on when he previously reported that authorities had no evidence to connect Vick to dog fighting. So this report needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
But more importantly, any report about what might happen three years from now needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Vick obviously won't play in 2007, and there seems to be widespread agreement that he won't play in 2008, but beyond that it's impossible to say for sure. I think Vick has played his last NFL game, but too many things can change for me to say that anyone who disagrees with me is "sadly mistaken."

Mort hasn't been as reprehensible as Len P but he hasn't been very good either.

Let's hope this is Motensen's wishful thinking and not a real source. If Vick wants to redeem himself, he needs to team up with the Humane Society and clean his former neighgorhood of dog fighting and teach young kids that dog fighting is not a cool thing. Well, that's my wishful thinking...

Well, again I speak my mind about Michael Vick. You know, maybe, just maybe, his apology is sincere....
But I CONDEMN Espn--they are trying to make this a racial issue (duh?)... it is NOT! It is about animal abuse and gambling (yeah, so what). The main issue is the animal abuse....don't try to say it's cultural...my friends at work are saying it is a GANG issue, which I never thought about...I see these low-lifes walking the streets with pit bulls on leashes but I never thought they were using them for their own gain.....MIchael Vick is worth too much money to the NFL for them to ban him forever.... the bottom line is money, not the humane treatment of animals.

In the end Roger Goodell will say whether Vick comes back in the NFL which won't be in the near future. Vick, although one of the highest paid QB's, is the last reason Roger would let him back in the NFL. He is not that important to them and is not one of the elite QB's. The NFL is a corporation bound by rules and regulations. If Nike, Reebok and other endorsers dropped him why would Roger be obligated to reinstate Vick. NFL football is not a right, it is a privilege. The ultimate decision will come from the principles in the NFL, owners and Roger. It is not a one man decision. By the way, that sincere apology was mapped out by his attorney's which Vick memorized and made sure he covered the points given to him.

If Vick pays his debt to society, he should be given a second chance. Remember, Vick is a first timer offender, he does not have a history of felony convictions.
Dick @ 8, Seems like you're thinking with your heart and not your head. There are many, many athletes that play sports without an endorsement contract(s). Goodell could care less if Nike void the Vick contract, thats a reflection on Vick not the NFL. And Nike is not about to boycott the NFL, there is too much money to be made.
If the owners got together and decided to not allow Vick to play, well that my firend is call Collusion, and that will not stand in a court of law. About Vick's statement being prepared by his attorneys. WTF, that's what attorneys are for. Vick did say that he is not good at public speaking, why not rely on his attorney to prepare a speech?
Vick will play again, not becasue he is a good quaterback, but because he put bodies in the stands.

oh pamela. when you say that people are mad because they can't tax the money vick made, are you referring to money he made form football and endorsements, or the money he made gambling on dogfights, or the cut of the purse he got when one of his dogs won?

I agree with Michael Smith. Vick has probably played his last down in the NFL. The league is very concise and serious about the gambling issue, especially from a player who funds a gambling operation. This really reflects on the utter stupidity of Mike Vick. He knew if the league found out about his gambling operations he'd be dismissed from the NFL. He also knew if he got caught running an illegal dog-fighting operation, across state lines, he'd be subject to prison time. It's not like he needed the money. Under the circumstances it's hard to feel any pity for him.

Blacks who fall from the grace (favor) of whites has no more value to them than a dead DOG. These same white folk who are crucifying Vick, kill healthy animals everyday in pounds whose owners fail to pick them up withing four days. Vick killed wounded animals who couldn't recover. These hypocrits kill healthy animals that they refuse to provide shelter for. This dog-killing argument about the character of Vick is the epitome of hypocracy. It shows the value whites place upon blacks that no longer serves their arena needs for revenue producing entertainment. If Vick were white this discussin wouldn't be still at a fevor pitch. The discussion represents nothing more than the opportunity of whites to vent their suppressed envy and hatred for the physical superioty of black atheletes over their white counterparts in particular and their disdain for the advancement and predominance of blacks in this industry in general.

Most of these comments are reflective of the racist attitudes and the human value that whites attribute to black atheletic entertainers. When a circumstance presents itself that stimulates our inner and subconscious thinking, one sees that to many whites and possibly the majority of them place no more value on blacks as they do DOGS. At least Vick has the decency to euthanize a dog badly injured in a dogfight. These same animal lovers who are expressing their disdain for Vick will kill a dog if he is not picked up by his owner from the pound within four days, and think nothing of it. What hyprocrasy!! What is truly being expressed in this situation is not love for DOGS but hatred for blacks who for whites are nothing more than entertainers and revenue producers. When that value is no longer there, their value is nothing greater than a dead DOG.

Hey Dr. DeWayne- If your people are so physically superior, then why don't you dominate golf, or hockey, or tennis, or swimming/diving, or gymnastics, or any winter olympic sports, or racing? (where's Bill Lester when you need him)?
You talk about your "physical superiority". What about the intellectual superiority of the white man? How much of an I.Q. does it take to jump up high and stuff a ball in a hole, Mr. Shaq? Who do you suppose owns the teams you physically superior minions perform for? You guessed it- White people, with our "suppressed envy and hatred". We sign your checks, you do all the work, and we sit back and watch. One more thing, Reverend Sharpton, I mean Dewayne- Vick killed wounded dogs who would not have been wounded had he not put them in the ring to fight!
