Generally speaking, compared to his first three seasons managing the White Sox, Ozzie Guillen has been very quiet this year. Sure, there was that incident on the radio back in May, but it's not like he's questioned the sexuality of anybody in the media this season.Well, it looks like Ozzie's gone the route of Popeye, because he's stood all he can stand and he can't stands no more. On Wednesday night he went off on his players, saying they were killing him, and on Thursday night he went after the media for their reaction to it.
"It's my job to explain things and I protect [players] a lot-more than I should," Guillen said Thursday night. "The manager eight miles from me (the Cubs' Lou Piniella) was [ripping] his players, 'I need good players,' and no one [said anything]. I say we need to play better and all of a sudden they say, 'Ozzie is a piece of [crud].'
"Lou said, 'I need players, I bring in this guy, this guy, no one do the job,' and 'Oh, Lou is tough, Lou is great.' I say anything close to what he says and I'm the bad guy, my players won't love me anymore?
"Well, don't love me anymore. Don't like me, but win for me and everything will be fine. I hope they talk [trash] about me their whole life. 'He's a piece of [trash], he's [a bad guy], but we're champions.' I'll take that. I'd rather they say that then, 'Oh, Ozzie is great, he's my friend, he love my kids and we're in last place.' "

It seems as though Ozzie doesn't notice the subtle differences between him and Piniella. First of all, there is the fact the Cubs are in first place, and that makes a huge difference in how the media are going to handle anything you say. Second of all, there's quite a bit of difference between "I need good players," and "They're killing me!"
I've never taken offense to anything Guillen's said, because I really don't mind the blatant honesty from a manager. The cookie cutter answers most of them give grow quite boring after a while. You don't have to worry about that when it comes to Ozzie.
Still, the talk that Guillen should lose his job, which he brings on himself by repeatedly telling his boss to fire him, is a bit ridiculous. The man just won a World Series two seasons ago, the first one in Chicago since like 1789. That buys you a bit of time. Besides, God himself couldn't lead a team with as bad a bullpen as the White Sox have anywhere.
Now if the White Sox are 20 games under .500 and in last place again next season, then yes, firing Guillen would be justified.

Lou Pinella is a big- over-rated blowhard.
Thank heavens Ozzie is at least refreshing.

Pinella won the world series as a manager once, and that's only because the team was already winning, and Pete Rose was screwing them up with his gambling. He gets 116 wins with the Mariners, and they lose to the Yankees. He comes to the Devil Rays again nothing. He also did not win with the Yankees, so why is Pinella such a great manager? Guillen only 3 years and he has as many World Series as Pinella. Hmmm.
