Giants Shrink Told Team Not to Draft Shockey

A new book written with the cooperation of former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi reveals that when the Giants took tight end Jeremy Shockey in the first round of the 2002 draft, not everyone within the organization was on board.

Specifically, the book reveals:
Before the 2002 draft, a team psychologist told Accorsi "You can't draft (Jeremy) Shockey." Undeterred, Accorsi flew to Ada, Okla., met with Shockey, looked into his background, and convinced the Giants to draft him anyway.
That's surprising, as while Shockey sometimes gets a little overheated both on and off the field, he actually has the kind of competitive, fiery spirit that teams usually crave. It sounds like this psychologist was hired to advise a football team when he would have been better off advising a company on which personality traits to look for in middle managers.
