Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has told his team who's starting at quarterback in Sunday's season opener. Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper know which one of them is the starter and which one is the backup. But who will it be? Although the team won't say -- and might not say until game time -- Adam Schefter of NFL Network says it's McCown.
That seems like the right choice, if for no other reason than McCown has spent the last four months learning Kiffin's offense, while Culpepper has only been a Raider for one month. But the real question is when JaMarcus Russell is going to report. Although his uncle thinks they're close, the fact that the season is about to begin and Russell still hasn't reported is an indication that the Raiders' quarterback situation is going to be a mess all year.

If McCown is really the starter, then I'm missing something from the sidelines. He played in Detroit. Big deal - it's not like he was an integral part of their team so as to give him an inherent advantage of knowing how their defense works. McCown's stated advantage is that he's been with the Raiders longer than Culpepper. So what? Having had more time in the playbook and having taken more snaps with the starting offense, he should have better numbers than Culpepper, but he doesn't. At the end of the Seattle game, McCown and Culpepper had almost even numbers for pass attempts/completions for approximately the same yardage. McCown is zero touchdowns to zero interceptions compared to 4/1 for Culpepper (I'll take four scores to one interception all day long). McCown's rating is 75 (very average). Culpepper's rating is 95. Not to mention the veteran experience and scrambling ability Dante has. Advantage: Culpepper. Period.

Political decision. They can't admit that their best QB was picked up off the street. While they don't get Russell signed.

If Russell is signed before Sunday and Culpepper gets cut, the Raiders save $2.5 million in roster bonus money for Culpepper. It's all about the money, not the quarterback.

I don't see them cutting Dante. Trade Walter and sign Russell, yes; 2.5 on a signing bonus for the best stop gap quarterback available is pocket change for Big Al.
