After getting pasted today by Oregon (39-7) in the Big House, Michigan's upset loss to Appalachian State last week is starting to change its dimensions. First, it was (and probably still is) the biggest upset in the history of college football -- possibly any football, and possibly all sports. Now it's starting to look like the egg belongs on the face of the college football pollsters who voted Michigan into the Top 5 pre-season. Despite losing their last two games of '06 based largely on the failures of anemic defense and unimaginative offense, Michigan still found themselves as Big Ten favorites and a trendy title contender pick to start their season. However, it's becoming clear that Michigan is simply not a good football team by any definition of the word. And although App State deserves the credit for last week's historic win, the anti-Wolverine evidence is mounting with every tick of the game clock. This team has serious problems.
Oregon marched up the field at will, scoring so easily that they began taking, ah, liberties with their attack. They appeared to start toying with Michigan as the lead grew, running funky trick plays (such as a Statue of Liberty which went for a first down, through multiple broken tackles), and then getting even funkier with a Statue "Keeper" play in which quarterback Dennis Dixon pretended to fling the ball, hid it behind his back, pretended to faux-handoff in the faux-fake, then kept it himself as he waltzed untouched into the end zone.
It was such an ugly display of defensive ineptitude that it was hard for me, a neutral observer, to watch.
Michigan mailed it in about the time the crowd started raining boos down onto the field. My gut says this team is done for the year.
I'm predicting a one or two win season for this team. Yes, they're that bad.

No one loves Michigan more than I do, but I mostly agree--it is painfully obvious that they are really bad this year. However, I don't see how anyone can think they will win two games, at best, this year, even though they do currently have the worst record in the big 10. They could certainly have another 7-5 year, probably a 6-6 year and possibly even a 5-7 year. And I don't see why everyone is badmouthing Michigan so much. I absolutely agree--the pollsters and the sports media overhyped Michigan, and now they just can't believe what's going on. There was never any real reason to think Michigan was the #5 team in the nation, nor that they could get to the national championship game. The funny part is there are still going to be some of them saying Michigan will beat Notre Dame next week when it was obvious Michigan wasn't even going to be able to stack up against Oregon. It's looking like not only will they not win the Big 10, they might not even make it to *any* bowl games. Few other teams get the benefit of the doubt and the undenying optimism that people out there lend to Michigan, even when this particular Michigan team and Carr have proven time and time again, going into three years now, that they aren't worthy. I hate it for Michigan, but they are just going to be an embarrassment to the Big 10 for at least the next two years.

Yeah I agree "nunya" they are bad but mainly bad on defense. I still think that offense is great with their physical attributes but now its in the mind. They didn't excute well in week 1 which alot of great teams dont in week one but they still win! When Michigan lost to APP St. that killed their confidence. This is really the same offense from last yr. just now their mind is blown. My goal for them is that they just make it to a bowl game to keep the nations longest consecutive bowl streak alive.

My question for anyone who has any insight or just likes to speculate is who's gonna be the next coach?
Michigan will be lucky to win 7 or 8 & anything less than winning out & winning the bowl game will cost Lloyd his job & not even that may save it. My hopes to be looked at as canidates are Les Miles (LSU) & Jeff Tedford (Cal). If they hire someone from within the program I just might have to start becoming a Michigan State fan that would probablly be less stressful, at least I would know what was coming. The good thing about this huge meltdown is that it has exsposed Ron English for the coach he is, which I thought was the case last year. Just last year he had an extremly talented group that made him look good. Now the AD would have to be a moron to even consider Ron, which some had speculated would happen. Back to the next coach quetion just think of what kind of QB Ryan Mallet could be under Jeff Tedford. My only worry with Jeff would be the defence, but a good defensive coordinator could shore that up. Any thoughts from anyone?

Anyone who says they are a Michigan fan and then says they hope they don't win another game is lying. There is no acceptable reason to root for your team to lose. I have been speaking out against Carr for at least 4-5 years, but I could never hope that Michigan loses a game. I would rather root for Notre Dame to win a game, than to root against Michigan.

All I heard from Michigan fans when the pre-season rankings came out was your whining over West Virginia being ranked above Michigan. You thought your Blue should have been ranked above ours because of your "explosive offense". Well, two games into the season, I see what you mean. Something must have happened up in Ann Arbor during the last pre-season week that made your "offense explode"...it must have been a blast of atomic proportions. I guess WVU was deservedly ranked above Michigan after all; you should just be happy that you enjoyed one shining moment before it all blew up in your face.
I find it ironic that it was the Mountaineers, although the Appalachian State version, that handed you your a** on a platter the first game of the season.
I just hope you can manage to get through to basketball season, when your top basketball "Mountaineer" (Beilein) that you had to get from the athletic mecca of Morgantown tries to make your frowns disappear by improving your also-hapless basketball program.

Ryan I don't know if you read the comments but you have now entered the category of 1st class liar. To suggest that you are a netural observer is a joke that only the morons would believe. I don't mind you being a UM hater, got lots of them around here. But please don't try pull that BS that you are netural; at least be honest that you are anything but.
"1-2 wins" Give me a f**cking break. I expect the Michigan haters to pile it on now. Nothing easier that shooting a wounded prey when he is already down. Of course if somehow Michigtan pulls this season around (not looking too hopeful at this point) most if not all of these maggets, along with yourself, will crawl back into pile of dung they came from.
Personally, it is a long season with a lot of games still to be played.

I saw it in the Rose Bowl last year, Michigan is just plain SLOW. They can't match up to athletic teams like Oregon, but that being said they can still probably go 6-2 in the Big 11. Big 11 teams look like they are running in mud, so they should be fine.

Michigan is having the kind of year other schools have had and the university president and athletic director have several huge decisions to make. First, how will Mr. Carr exit - will he be fired? ...or will he resign? ...or 'retire' outright or to an associate athletic director position? Possibilities galore and when will the big announcement take place! Second, I hope Michigan permits Mr. Carr to exit with some dignity and not "Bruce-ify" him the way Ohio State let Earle Bruce go oh so long ago. Finally, the powers that be have to decide if they want to recommit to being a football factory. With the advent of the Big Ten Network, member schools will have another influx of money so Michigan will be in a position to go nuts when looking for the next coach. But are they willing to spend upwards of $2 million for a coach to keep up with the Joneses not only within the conference but throughout D1 football? College football programs seem to be in a race to bottom of a moral abyss trying to outspend and out-hype each other. The problem is magnified by the legions of 'fans' clammoring for their program to be the 'best'. Well, enough of my rant...

The question is "how good is the Big 10". Last year we found out that they weren't very good. If the Big 10 is really bad then maybe Michigan can have a winning season. Winning the Big 10 and going to a BCS still seems like a stretch. Surely those outcomes are reserved for Wisconsin or Ohio State which appear to have decent teams, but we will see.
