Conservative Play Backfires on Auburn

Unbelievably strange game. Auburn turned the ball over 5 times and USF came away with 0 points. One of the turnovers had the Bulls on the Auburn 3 and still nothing.

Both Tommy Tuberville and Jim Leavitt played things extremely conservative for the entire game. If anything, increasingly conservative the later into the game. With under a minute left, and USF facing a 4th and goal from the 1, Leavitt still opted to kick a field goal to tie despite his kicker missing 4 of 5 prior attempts. The field goal was good.

Tuberville answered the conservative play by running out the clock and taking his chances with OT. This despite having an excellent kicker in Wes Byrum and starting from the Auburn 36. Utterly and completely predictable.

Sure enough, with Auburn having the ball first in OT, the Tigers end up settling for the field goal after getting all of two yards. To be fair, though, if Brandon Cox was my best choice at QB, I'd probably go conservative as well and rely on defense and special teams.

USF appeared to remain just as conservative. Keeping it on the ground with QB Matt Grothe and one hand-off to the tailback. Then, on a 2nd and 9 from the Auburn 13, the Bulls took their shot. Grothe tossed a beautiful pass to Jessie Hester, Jr. on the left side of the endzone. All the Auburn players and the ESPN play-calling crew were looking for the ball to go to Ammari Jackson along the right sideline.

A 26-23 road win for USF. For Auburn and Tommy Tuberville, another inexplicable early season loss.
