Unbelievably strange game. Auburn turned the ball over 5 times and USF came away with 0 points. One of the turnovers had the Bulls on the Auburn 3 and still nothing. Both Tommy Tuberville and Jim Leavitt played things extremely conservative for the entire game. If anything, increasingly conservative the later into the game. With under a minute left, and USF facing a 4th and goal from the 1, Leavitt still opted to kick a field goal to tie despite his kicker missing 4 of 5 prior attempts. The field goal was good.
Tuberville answered the conservative play by running out the clock and taking his chances with OT. This despite having an excellent kicker in Wes Byrum and starting from the Auburn 36. Utterly and completely predictable.

Sure enough, with Auburn having the ball first in OT, the Tigers end up settling for the field goal after getting all of two yards. To be fair, though, if Brandon Cox was my best choice at QB, I'd probably go conservative as well and rely on defense and special teams.
USF appeared to remain just as conservative. Keeping it on the ground with QB Matt Grothe and one hand-off to the tailback. Then, on a 2nd and 9 from the Auburn 13, the Bulls took their shot. Grothe tossed a beautiful pass to Jessie Hester, Jr. on the left side of the endzone. All the Auburn players and the ESPN play-calling crew were looking for the ball to go to Ammari Jackson along the right sideline.
A 26-23 road win for USF. For Auburn and Tommy Tuberville, another inexplicable early season loss.

Tommy Tuberville decision to run out the clock and try his luck in overtime was probably because he was afraid his quarterback Brandon Cox would throw an interception or fumble on a quarterback sack would give USF a chance to either score a last second field goal or touchdown return. One things for sure Rush Limbaugh would have loved it since it was a conservative play calling game.

When your offense is largely inept, as Auburn's has been dating back to last season, yeah, you take your chances in OT. There have to be any number of second-string QBs in college football (not to mention starters, obviously) who are currently wasting away on the bench who would have been a better option at QB than Cox has been since he first took the reigns, but such realities only serve to point out the inexact nature of the recruiting process. Odd how a team can be three and four deep at one posiion and largely bereft at another, but that's just how it goes.

Bench Cox. I think we are better off playing a freshman at QB. This guy absolutely sucks to be a senior.

Can't wait to see Moooo U (Mis State) and the Kittens tie up next weekend. Two teams with NO offense and the ability to give the ball to the opponents 5 or 6 times a game. Should be a barn burner, and there are plenty of barns on their campuses.....

I wouldn't buy USF just yet. AU gave the game away on a silver platter. USF wasn't so good but AU played that bad. 6 turnovers? Had my Tigers played any team in the SEC the score would have been ugly. As it was USF couldn't captalize on AU's mistakes. AU has serious issues, Mario Fannin needs to carry a ball with him everywhere he goes, i.e., class, dates, bed, toilet, shower,etc..... Cox needs to wake up, stop throwing into double and triple coverage, stop throwing off his back foot, stop ducking after he releases the ball......the list goes on. In his defense the recievers need to catch the freakin ball when it hits them in the hands (horrible performance). The line was much improved over the K-State game but still wasn't getting the push up the middle against an undersized D-line. Our defense missed alot of tackles but over all played well enough to win. Special Teams once again played very well except for a couple of kick off coverages. And last but not least Tubby managed the game pretty well until the last minute of regulation. Coach Tubberville, I have just one question.....Why on earth do you not try to drive into field goal range and give your kicker a chance to win the game....especially with the huge momentum swing that has just taken place? Our defense was exhausted. You gamble on our defense stopping and USF missing yet another field goal from chip shot range? I would have taken the ugly win and run with it. Now all I have is misery over an ugly loss
I wouldn't say the best team won and you can't convince me otherwise. Come on Mr. Truth get a grip AU self destructed. USF was a tough team and deserves alot of credit. But thats as far as it goes MERRY CHRISTMAS USF. And as for you Sambass (rhymes with jackass) its along way to the ironbowl so dont be so cocky. Hell you may even get Croomed again before the iron bowl. War Eagle.

The problem for Auburn is that there are still high hopes here. We don't have any idea how Blake Fields or a big recruit(Kodi Burns or the injured Neil Caudle), would play, and we're afraid to play them because we still are hoping for 10 wins...not to take lumps. And it is a shame to do this to players like Mario Fannan, Ben Tate, Brad Lester, et.al.
Auburn didn't get more conservative; they were already super conservative and USF stopped worrying about Cox's passing and started attacking for sacks.
It is ironic, but many of my friends are just now realizing how good of a quarterback Jason Campbell was.

I disagree with "the truth". I think that the only area that SF is better than AU is at quarterback. If AU had simply run the ball (Fannin was unstoppable save for the two fumbles) and had not given up the FOUR turnovers in the second half, then conversely, a not-even-close win by AU. SF is a good, good team. Really no shame to lose to them, but to say they are better the AU? Please....

Brandon Cox absolutely stinks!! And he always has really. I don't think he deserves the opportunity to start anymore. Here you have a 5th year senior who keeps letting his team down week after week. I think a younger quarterback, with more potential, who hasn't been letting his team down week after week...deserves to start. Sorry Brandon, you couldn't cut it. And Al Borges...you may want to just keep renting, instead of buying a house.

The worst offense since coach Nall had the title of offensive coordinator. Borges has his mind on raising kids not football. As for Cox hmm gotta go. All problems lead back to offense.

It's time to stop coddling Brandon Cox. You bench Fannin for two fumbles, but keep Cox in with two interceptions and a fumble? Next. Cut him ass and put in the Freshman. He has done this against Georgia Tech and last year against Georgia. Send him back to Trussville, Al to start his gas pumping career.

I agree, time for a change in quarterbacks. To have a program as good as AU has and to have a quarterback than continuously is a let down - we need a change. I just don't understand why they keet putting him in when he is so limited at best and has so many problems. Can't run the ball, takes to long to get rid of it, and throws so many passes that are incomplete or interceptions. There has to be someone than can at least do not worse and give us a little hope. We just hold our breath every time he has his hands on the ball. Please give us a NEW QB.

Do not worse? What language is that?
Tuberville is a skank and AU was rated way above this year's talent level.
Did you ever think that maybe Cox is their best QB and there is not a better choice at AU?
Did you ever think that USF is just as, if not more, talented as most teams in the SEC?
Wake up and smell the coffee...SEC is not the only place where good football players go to play.

First: We can't expect to have the defense on the field for 80% of the game and NOT help them out by scoring some points.
Second: We can't continue to conservatively sit on a 3-point lead against anyone anymore just because we lack confidence, don't want to show non-conference teams other plays or just see how much defense and special teams can win it for us.
Third: I think that we have some serious problems at QB. Seriously, Cox is a 5th-year senior and is older than many NFL QBs. He knows better than to manage a game the way that he did over the last two weeks. I just don't think that our coaching staff is doing a very good job of putting our offense in a position to win. Too many dropped passes, too many turnovers and too many hesitant calls.
Even if we win the west, it will be tainted b/c of this. Forget the fact that we are 33-6 over the last three years. Our luck had to run out sooner or later, but I am disappointed that it did in the way it did.

Pathetic game. We must have used up our nine lives (cause we were lucky a great deal last week and earlier in the USF game). I've completely lost confidence in our 24 yr old QB (Cox). Sure he has shown promise early in his time at Auburn, but in the clutch moments he goes south on us (Wisconsin in bowl game, Georgia last year, Ga Tech in opener year before last, etc). Damn he's been around too long to look like he did against Ks St and USF. Fannin will be good, I think he was trying to hard to make something big happen. And Tubberville, game coaching has never been his strong suit. He has a tough time changing gameplans, even when one isn't working for him. He brings in talent, develops them pretty well; but just can't react quickly to tight, unforeseen game challenges. He's only shown that ability once or twice in his time at Auburn. If we are leading big at half, there's real danger we are going to lose the game, especially at the start of the season (where our pure talent can't pull it out). It's going to be a long season. We should beat N Mex St, Miss St, Tenn Tech and Miss to give us five wins. Vandy will be tough for 6. Then hopefully we can hold on to the Iron Bowl for #7. Georgia looks weak for #8. Georgia maybe. LSU and Florida, Tubby you need to get Blake in there now to hone his skills for these big games, you just can't do it with Cox!
