For the first time in recorded history, the Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish are rolling into their upcoming game with 0-2 records. Both teams are riding four game losing streaks, humiliating 30 point home losses, and, with the recent news of Chad Henne's injury, will both likely be trotting out true freshmen quarterbacks. In what should be a throughly sarcastic affair for both teams, Mike Hart has provided a little bit of drama for the otherwise uninteresting "Slump Buster Bowl" (do you like the name? I made it up.)You see, the great H-20 has guaranteed a victory. And he didn't just guarantee a victory sometime this season, he specifically guaranteed a win against Notre Dame next week.
"We're going to win next week," Hart said. "There's no question in my mind. I guarantee we will win next week. I'm going to get this team ready. Guaranteed."
Well, it's not quite Joe Namath's Super Bowl III guarantee. A guarantee in a game featuring two winless and unranked teams probably falls more in the "You won't pay a lot for this muffler" caliber of all-time guarantees, but hey, it's a start. The good news for both teams is that, by rule, one team technically does have to win the game, although there might be some obscure rule that calls for a dual forfeit if both teams go scoreless through ten overtime frames. I'll get right on researching that and let you know.

1. The favoritism in Bowl selection is an outrage. It may be that the Motor City Bowl has already extended an invitation to Michigan and they could end up with a losing record.

After the first 2 games the Irish played - expected Michigan to come strong - and the Irish would not catch a break untill Navy in November, wich BTW they have traditionaly not covered ATS. Instead the measuring stick will come against the Wolverines. Clausen realy didnt have a bad day STAT wise- just 1 INT and over 50% 17 of 32 . The big concern is only for 144 yds and the only shot at a EndZone was intercepted after a nice drive.
The thing I hope they avoid is trapping themselves into the rookie QB sickness of just short pass and predictable runs. You have to take some shots, and even if they fail he will grow, but in a rivalry game like this they can't just sit back and think simplicity will win.

4. geez, mike, too bad ya didn't guarantee a victory over App State and Oregon. Then you'd be 2-0 instead of 0-2. Or, given the fact that you guys haven't won since Bo Schembechler passed on to his eternal reward, you'd just be another Michitigan blowhard.

6. You have to love it if you live in the south. Michigan and Notre Dame winless and one will still be that way next Monday. The Big 10 gets all the ink and they are so weak and have been for a few years now. THE Ohio State University got slaughtered by Florida last year and Michigan lost their bowl game. Only the Badgers won in a game that really meant anything. They need to get some speed in the Big 10.

7. Hank, my son plays NFL flag football in Slippery Rock. Michigan has called but won't give us the Home & Home schedule. We have been approached about joining the Big Ten. We're holding out for a tougher conference, maybe the WAC will call.

8. I'll venture to say that ND wins in a butt ugly contest and the Meeshigan fans come unglued on national TV.

9. I'd be more impressed by Mike Hart's "guarantee" if he hadn't looked stark-staring certifiable while he was making it.
It's understandable that the media are all over this upcoming clash: How many chances do they get to produce a live broadcast of a train wreck?
PS, do please get on that research of the ten-overtime rule--I'd been wondering about that eventuality myself. Great minds.......
