Oh, Berkeley hippies, how I love you and your quixotic quest to save a few trees adjacent to Memorial Stadium for no particular reason whatsoever. It is you and your irrelevant mountain of red tape that has delayed the renovation project Jeff Tedford demanded if he was going to stay at Cal, and now a judge has said the hippies can stay:
A judge on Wednesday refused the University of California, Berkeley's request to immediately evict a group of protesters who took up residence in an oak grove threatened by the planned construction of a campus athletic center.
In denying UC Berkeley's request for an emergency restraining order, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Keller said university officials failed to prove the tree-sitters posed an immediate health and safety menace

Best part: the trees will be taken down (because it will happen, probably around the time Phish reunites and these hippies get distracted singing 'Wilson') to build sport facilities that won't collapse when the next earthquake happens... that's right, they're more worried about saving trees and impressing their girlfriend Moonbeam than the scores of people who may die when one of those building collapses.
And the courts back 'em up...
C'est la vie, say the old folks. Goes to show you never can tell.

have you heard of global warming?
UC wants to gut the stadium and build a new one inside after they build the gym. it will all cost a billion dollars in the end. even the new stadium will be a death trap as it is right on top of the most dangeous fault line in america.
there is a global war for global warming and Berkeley cares more about sports than saving lives.

Great response, common terry. Those trees dozen trees will really make a major impact on global warming, and we all know how much global warming affects earthquakes.
My favorite part of all of this was the video from the Cal-Tenn game showing one of the guys in the trees with six-pack of toilet paper. Hey, genius, what the hell do you think was used to make that toilet paper? The broken dreams of young communists entering the real world?

Just to clarify, particularly for August West--students are not involved in this protest, to the extent that it would be impossible for a current tree-sitter to also be a student. They are, after all, fenced in and unable to attend classes. This also makes the tree-sitters trespassers on UC property, because they aren't carrying staff or student identifications (or football tickets) that would grant them access to the campus. We're just as mystified as everyone else in the country.

These "environmentalists" are probably misguided because they have no clue what nature is. They live in a polluted megalopolis, far removed from any real wilderness element truly deserving preservation. Trees to them aren't something through which the wind blows in a silent, natural landscape; they're billboards from which they can proudly display the bling bling of an ideology they find fashionable. If they really wanted to make a difference, maybe they'd help clean up all the trash that makes Berkeley look like Detroit on intellectual steroids, or maybe they'd go protect a section of boreal forest (since it consumes more CO2 than any forest on earth).
