Prior to week 1, that question would have seemed ridiculous. Of course the Jaguars can stop the run. Defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson are one of the best pairs in the league. But the Titans ran wild against the Jaguars in the opener, and Atlanta quarterback Joey Harrington says the Falcons noticed:
A cynic would say that if the Falcons want to run the ball, it's because that's the only way to keep Harrington from losing the game. But I do think the Falcons can be effective running on the Jaguars, especially if they give Jerious Norwood the ball more often. (Oddly, Warrick Dunn got 22 carries in the opener for Atlanta, compared to just five for Norwood.) Against Tennessee, the Jaguars continually left the safeties back deep. To beat the Falcons, the Jaguars need to put eight in the box and challenge Harrington."You are always shocked to see any defense in the NFL give up that much yardage on the ground," Harrington said. "That's definitely not indicative of the type of defense they are."
So will Atlanta at least test the waters with its ground game?
"Absolutely," Harrington said, "but we do that within the course of our game plan. We are not going to go out on a tangent just because Tennessee has an abnormal amount of success doing that."
