Pedro Martinez Is Not Like the Rest of Us

And by that I mean: he's not human.

Just three starts after a injury and rehab that would have ended most pitchers' careers, Pedro Martinez is very nearly back to mid-season form. In six innings today against the Phillies, Martinez struck out nine, walked none, and yielded but one run. The Mets bullpen blew the game late, of course, but that's not the story. Pedro is.

For anyone that watched or followed the game (or even played baseball video games from time to time) over the past oh, decade or so realizes just how good Pedro was in that time. In his best season, in 2000, his WHIP was .74 (!!) He had a streak of ten straight games with more than ten strikeouts (!!!!!!). He was, quite possibly, the best pitcher of all-time for five seasons, seasons plopped smack dab in the middle of the steroid era. He was very, very good at baseball.

So it's good to see him back, and -- like Greg Maddux before him -- getting by guile instead of raw power. It's a different Pedro, but an equally entertaining one.

Also, he still has goofy hair. That always helps.
