After an unimpressive performance last week against the Titans, the Jaguars had ... an unimpressive performance against the Falcons today. The only difference is that Jacksonville squeaked out a 13-7 win. (And they were able to score all 13 points without Byron Leftwich!)
After the Jags' defense got absolutely demolished last week, the unit only allowed only 82 yards to the Warrick Dunn and Co. Throw in seven Joey Harrington sacks, and a couple of Matt Prater honks (he's the field-goal kicker -- I had to look it up too).
And John Carney, signed this week to replace Josh "I got injured during pregame ... no, really" Scobee, nailed two field goals that proved to be the difference.
I could say the Falcons continue to struggle in the post-Ron Mexico era, but that wouldn't be exactly true. Atlanta struggled with Mexico, so, yeah, the faces have changed but the results remain the same. In addition to the quarterback, new head coach Bobby Petrino also overhauled the offensive line, replacing the the lighter, quicker zone blockers with big, fat maulers. so far ... so bad.
Through two games, Harrington has been sacked 13 times -- including seven against the Jags -- and the running game is averaging 3.4 yards per carry. If there is a bright spot in all of this misery, Roddy White caught four passes for 81 yards. Sure Michael Jenkins went one for 15, but you gotta crawl before you walk.
For the Jags, Reggie Williams got to dress this week (he even caught two passes!), and 2005 first-rounder Matt Jones caught three passes for 36 yards. Basically, if you love watching a field full of first-round wide receiver busts, this was must-see television. Well, unless you actually live in Jacksonville.

To be fair, Petrino's "overhauled the offensive line, replacing the the lighter, quicker zone blockers with big, fat maulers. so far ... so bad" is one new lineman, the 2nd rounder Blalock. You could check that out right after you checked out Pratner, who is now replaced by old Morty Anderson.
And to say Atlanta has struggled like this before, in the past 5 years they won a wild card and a divisional playoff. They went 5-2 the beginning of the season the past 2 years if I remember right.
And it's hard for your OL or receivers to look good when you have a QB reject from Miami and Detroit.
