Jay Glazer Feeling Heat for Patriotgate Scoop

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports got the NFL scoop of the year when he obtained this tape, which shows how the Patriots' cheating procedures worked:

But like so many reporters who get big scoops, Glazer has infuriated the powers that be. In this case, that means NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who, according to various media reports, wants to know how a tape that was supposed to go directly from the Meadowlands sidelines to his office somehow got sent to Glazer in between.

And that raises the question of whether Fox, which has a multibillion-dollar deal in place with the NFL, might put some heat on Glazer to explain how he got the tape. Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News reports:

"I feel very good about breaking the story," Glazer said yesterday. "But I don't like the witch hunt (the NFL is conducting) because the wrong people get hurt. Everybody is going to have their theory about how I got it (the spy tape). They could be completely wrong. But they may look at somebody and think they are guilty, regardless."...

"I told them (Fox Sports executives) if my source is an issue then let's not run the video," Glazer said. "And if they come to me now and say, 'Look, you have no job unless you tell us.' I would tell them: 'Then I better start looking for a new job.' If I ever gave somebody up that would be my last scoop - ever. I live in a world of trust."

Obviously, that's the right approach for Glazer, and I'd be shocked if Fox asked him to give up his source. Fox knows that no matter how important its relationship with the NFL is, its relationship with its viewers is even more important. Glazer gave Fox's viewers some great information and should be congratulated for that.
