It was only a matter of time, wasn't it? Steve Spurrier announced Monday that he's benching 5th year senior quarterback Blake Mitchell in favor of sophomore Chris Smelley, citing Smelley's quicker release and decision making in the second half of South Carolina's loss to LSU:"I thought (Smelley) made some good, quick throws there and got rid of the ball and got hit," Spurrier said Sunday. "He threw some good-looking passes out there and hit a bunch of guys here and there. That is, I'm guessing, a chance to be the next guy benched. Not that a change isn't warranted, Carolina is a very un-Spurrier-like 71st nationally in passing offense at just 210 yards/game.
"... Blake had a lot of pressure on him. He's just struggling right now, so we're going to give Chris Smelley a chance."
Still, it's obvious that even if Spurrier's star is fading, his ego isn't. Anybody who has followed the Ol' Ball Coach's career has seen this same drama played out time and again: Spurrier sees his quarterback playing differently than he'd play quarterback (i.e., perfectly), so he sits him down. Interestingly, you can trace this move all the way back to last spring, when he was rotating signal callers instead of making sure Mitchell was ready to go all the way. Spurrier knew himself enough to know he couldn't stick with one guy for a whole season.
The question now is: will Spurrier resist the urge to burn Stephen Garcia's redshirt?

Steve Spurrier-He is probally the best coach in NCAA Football for blaming losses on his players instead of putting the blame where it belongs-on his on his self. To me a Collage Coach has many jobs. There are many ways to do this and Spurries uses the worst way and that is usinf fear, punishment and intiminadition. That is the way he coached at Florida. He was successful there because the players were easy to recruit, they put up with his tacticts of fear to be seen by pro scouts and make the pros. He does not care if his players succeed in learning and earning a degree so they can get an education. The players might need an education if they are injured or are forced to ride the bench if they make a mistake, and break Spurrier's code of perfection. The scouts don't see you on the bench. Spurrier was not very successfull coaching in the pro's as the professional players will tell a coach to kiss off. They know the game. They will play for a coach who is a coach and not a S.O.B. . They won't put up with fear tacticts. Florida did not want him back. He might as well just as well bench his sorry ass. A coach should motivate a player and work on his character a little bit. Winning a game may be the most fun for the fans but it is a better win if the team does it the way Georgia won Saturday. The players at Georgia will make it in life if they don't make it to the pro's as they have an education and character. I could go on about my dislike for Spurrier but he sort of bores me. I wonder if he is proud that he is one of the top five of the meanest coaches in the NCAA. Good luck Steve you will need it. You must have had a pretty bad upbringing. Bye James.

I believe Steve knows what is best, after all... he is the Coach. It doesn't matter what us arm chair quarterbacks think. I played football for a number of years but it doesn't make me a expert. Leave that to the coach(s). If I was a coach and things weren't going well I'd make a change at the QB slot. Makes sense. Blake has had his share of off field troubles and doesn't seem to be focused, could be the whole team isn't focused... but the QB always gets the blame... right or wrong. I'm sure anyone who plays for Steve knows he will be quick to make a change if something isn't going right... right or wrong. I hope it works out and if not I know Blake (like last year) will be willing and ready to take over. And... I'm glad we kicked the "Bull-Puppies" Butt too...!

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Spurrier's badmouthing of the team is sometimes a little bothersome. But let's face the facts here: Blake Mitchell, the senior QB and supposed leader of this team, decided that he was going to screw around in classes and was suspended for the first game. Good job on the leadership thing. Since then, other than in a decent but not really very good outing against UGA, he seems only to be able to take sacks or throw interceptions. Taking sacks is sometimes inevitable, but watching the LSU game, it was clear that he could have thrown it away a couple of times and instead held onto it for some reason. That's a mistake that a smart, senior QB doesn't make, and you know that Spurrier is telling him to know when to throw it away (notice that Spurrier harps on about Smelley's "quick release"). And the interceptions are interceptions. Blake Mitchell just isn't very good, at least not consistently--Lou Holtz recruited him to be a hand-off QB, not a passer. On the other hand, Smelley looked decent in the second half. We'll just have to see how this goes.
By the way, Spurrier may be an asshole, but I've always heard good things about his commitment to making sure his players perform in the classroom and develop good character. James Herring just resents that Spurrier owns Georgia, even at South Carolina.
