And I'm not even referring to their play in September, honest! After failing to make the playoffs, the team felt compelled to reach out and apologized to its tortured fan base, sending this message to those
who subscribe to the team's email newsletter:
All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year's success. We did not meet our organization's expectations - or yours. Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you - our loyal fans - and we know we have let you down. We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year.
Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team," the statement said. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond.
Was it needed? Of course not, this is sports, things like this happen ... but it's still a smart move, especially with CitiField set to open
next spring in 2009. (

Perhaps a full-page in one of the city's dailies would have created more attention, or at the very least prominently displaying the apology on the team's website. If the Mets' front office brass is truly sorry, why bury the apology in a medium only a limited percentage of the fans will actually use?

1. This press release was one of the biggest crocks of crap that I have ever seen. But it doesn't compare to what they did or should I say did not do; and as sad and as low it is, as the NY Mets are, not for being a bunch of underachieving (Yes this includes D. Wright who couldn't come through this year with men on and 2 outs) players, over-paid and immature players galore, finger-pointers (Billy Wagner), poorly managed and GM'd....it's just not the fact that they insulted us by putting a bunch of crap out there the second half of they year and insulted us , the fans, even more with this pathetic apology; They have greatly insulted the children and the true fans that not only went and supported them in their last embarrasment of a game Sunday, but stayed for them to come out at the end, a tradition that they have always done, and show a true thanks for them being there through their horrific times of a season. NO, THE APOLOGETIC METS NEVER CAME OUT; their swollens heads and heavy wallets kept them down and away from the true fan BOO-HOO you bunch of saps. You should have pulled your wallowing, ostrich heads out of your (sands) and came out for those who waited to see you as humans, not a bunch of self-induced cry babies.

3. Not to worry. People have now at least heard of the Mets. Before this year, they just seemed like a non descript, mediocre team struggling in the shadow of another team. Funny what it takes to get a team known.

4. you know, it wasn't just the Mets that fell on their faces. the record will show the Phillies had one hell of a run, buried them again and again with their spirited play. I'm sick of the NuYo-centric approach that AOL takes on these matters.
